FYI, this game is also available on Xbox and PlayStation. Nintendo didn't develop it. They do 1st party ports, but this isn't one of them.
Bringing a game to a new platform involves real engineering work and development costs. This port also includes new features and updated artwork. At $25 MSRP, it's already more affordable than typical Switch releases ($60-$70). Manufacturing costs for cartridges are fairly consistent regardless of price, so the markup is fairly modest. It's not going to involve as much effort as a new Zelda game but the economics aren't supportive of a $10 price point either.
The good news is if this doesn't feel like the right fit, there are other options. You can always stick with the original 1999 version if you have it, or pick it up on Steam during the spring sale for $3. Or hold out for a deeper discount. I'm going to grab this. Thanks, OP!

This is a great game. Cheaper than a digital copy right now too.

I love how Nintendo has found a way to sell old games over and over and over again to people who have already paid for them in the past. Ports should not be $20. This goes for the Rollercoaster Tycoon deal on the FP right now too.

That's crazy how well this game has aged! Classic!
$20 isn't terrible, but definitely will make someone who's never played this game think twice.

I love this game! I used to play the original on PS1 back in the day with a group of friends, passing the controller back and forth to one another (before wireless controllers were standard). And if I remember correctly, we would load the game and start playing a level and switch the game disc for a music CD and listened to DMX or Wu-Tang or whatever music we had available, while playing the game. Nostalgia!

They got away with Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen for $20 even though all the other GBA games were $8 on Virtual Console before it shut down just 3 years ago.

Only bad thing about this game is that it's not popular enough (online)

Anyone know if the rope physics are the same as they were on Dreamcast? Played hundreds of hours of this game against siblings twenty years ago.
