Built rugged but I would not trust something like an electric lighter for outdoor or survival situations where I need fire. Search up electric lighter and there's a three pack for $10 and bring a gas lighter and matches along with you. The electric stick lighters I got from AliExpress and the are still "rugged" despite being in the garage and tossing them everywhere. I still wouldn't trust them to hold a charge though for survival.

Do you have some evidence or experience with this model or others to back up your claim or is this just conjecture?

That's true. It is not such a great price because Amazon has a 2 pack for $10

For survival. . . Because we are all struggling with a needs to build a fire for warmth on a daily basis. Very true.

I think the piezo ignited blowtorch version of this form factor is probably a better buy. not only are they windproof, but they can torch like 1-2 inches out from the lighter, whereas this style, it's gonna be hard bc the plasma thing is actually a bit recessed into the device. so you're started 1-2 inches of range worse than the torch one, and then add on a few more millimeters for the receessed lighting / ignition zone. plus there are some electronics in it, so that reliance on tech could be another point of failure. Not good IMO.

I have this exact lighter case but it's a blowtorch. I've pulled it out eveyr 3-5 years for 15 years, and the fuel tank has not lost it's fuel , it's sealed well enough that the fuel is stable over decades, apparently. I keep a little can of pressured butane to refill it as well.

It's one part of my system, with backups being: fresnel magnifying lens (I think they're used for reading small print in books, it's like 8.5x11 " in dimensions, but it can focus a lot of solar power because of its size. Weighs very little. Can be rolled up for storage, or stored flat. The other one I keep is one of these one handed emergency tinder kits that can be operated with only one hand (military or camping purposes, if you happen to get injured). Even if you aren't injured it's still useful because it has a big cylinder shaped shaft that you can scrape off some of it and then use your knife and flint to throw sparks on it. I also have a little waterproof medicine bottle to store some of those heavy duty blast matches that burn really hot and are supposed to work even in damp conditions.

Couple that with the best kindling you can source ahead of time, which is plastic grocery bags. They weigh nothing, if wet the they don't saturate with moisture. The water droplets just collect here and there and there are still places on the bag that can ignite right then, or wait about 60 seconds and the droplets will be pretty much gone. It's the best kindling because you can just stick in the middle or top of your flammable material pile, it starts dripping flaming gobs of molten plastic (they're kinda hard to put out after they get going), and all the sudden you got your stuff catching fire all over the place in your pile of kindling materials.

a lot of people have reinvented the wheel with a lot of these lighters. I think most of them do work, but the only you don't want to make space for in your bug out bag is the "diesel piston" style lighters, which fail in tests at an alarming rate Embarrassment
