Heads up for anyone considering the Netgear EX6400 for OpenWrt:
  • EX6400 v1 / v2 → Fully supported and work well (Qualcomm/ath10k, stable WiFi)
  • EX6400 v3 → Will flash and boot OpenWrt, but WiFi does not work
The v3 uses a MediaTek MT7629 platform, and currently there's no working WiFi driver in OpenWrt. Ethernet works, but it basically ends up as a wired-only device, which defeats the purpose of using it as an extender/AP.
Make sure to check the hardware version before buying—v1/v2 are solid, v3 is not usable for wireless (at least for now).

There may be some indication of the hardware version printed on the outer box, usually near the serial/barcode label. It will definitely be printed on the unit itself once opened—but by then it would obviously be too late.

Please do not pay more than $10 for this really outdated device.. it is wifi 5.. not 6, not 6e, not 7.. i have 3 of these, am running openwrt on them to make them functional. They work well, but are atleast 5-7 yrs old tech. If anyone thinks this is a good deal, I have 3 to sell at $30 Smilie
