If this can save me a dryer cleaning visit once/year (and do every other or every 3 years), it'd be worth it...but I'm not sure if I'll cause more damage that it's worth

Typically if your vent is plugged the thermal overload or heating element will burn up. On newer dryers the overload is a one and done. In my opinion this device is next to useless and I wouldn't buy it for $1. Taking your dryer apart is simple and typically can be done with a Phillips screw driver in most cases. The vent can obviously be taken off easily.
