Does it require subscription, or is there a limit on number of free prints using the app?

There are some subscription features in the app but not required to make good use of the printer. I really like it, at this price it's a no-regret purchase.

Free to use but if you want fancy font, it cost extra. Not bad still

They are... but look up niimbot hack on YT.
You can hold your empty legit roll to the back of the machine when you load in a non-legit roll and it reads the RFID through the back.
The options on alibaba for labels are infinite and cheap.

I recently investigated and bought one of these kinds of printers.
Almost went with the Niimbot due to cheap initial price but you are locked into their labels due to RFID tags.
You can work around this by keeping another set of labels nearby when opening/closing the lid to reload but it's a hassle.
I went with the Phomemo brand. More expensive (around $30-40 for the M110 or M220) but you can get cheap labels with more variety. They have recently changed their app to add some subscription features (add'l fonts, borders, etc.) but you can get by with the good selection that are free.
For me, the extra $15 initial cost was worth not being locked in to their ecosystem.

Most of these use plastic labels that hold up really well except the ink comes off.
I watched a couple of video reviews that showed that. One tried them on mugs that were wiped clean by the heat of the dishwasher (label was still good). Another polished them in jewelry slurry and it held up well.

its like the inkjet printer model sell the printer cheap then make up in inks...except this is with labels since you can't use any generic labels and are locked into their expensive labels.
