GMKtec's NucBox M8 looks like a compact Ryzen 5 PRO mini PC with Oculink that lands well for the price, especially for light gaming, a Steam box, or a small Linux setup. The 16GB and 512GB configuration is the main draw, and Windows can be wiped and reinstalled cleanly if the factory image feels cluttered. The biggest limitation is the LPDDR memory, which cannot be upgraded, and the listing may also be wrong about HDMI, with the product page showing HDMI 2.0 instead of 2.1. It is a capable small system, but the fixed RAM keeps it from being as flexible as some alternatives.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. A fresh Windows 11 install can be done by choosing "I don't have a product key," and Windows should activate automatically once the mini PC connects to the internet. Rufus can also be used to create the installer and bypass Microsoft account requirements.

  • No. The LPDDR memory is soldered, so the RAM cannot be upgraded later. That makes the 16GB configuration a fixed limit, which matters if you want more headroom for gaming or heavier workloads.

  • Often no extra drivers are needed beyond Windows itself, and if something is missing you can install drivers afterward rather than copying them from the factory image. The main exception mentioned is Intel NIC drivers, which may need to be downloaded separately if Ethernet isn't working.

  • Yes, a fresh Windows install is recommended because these systems can ship with manufacturer bloatware, spyware, and a large number of startup popups. Cleaning it up after first boot can take time.

  • No. The GMKtec product page shows 1× HDMI 2.0, not HDMI 2.1, so the listing/specs appear to be wrong on that point.

I have NUC from these guys. My only issue was the massive amount of POPUPS on boot up. Took me some time to clean it.

Immediately format the drive and install a fresh copy of Windows.
It's what I do for every new computer, regardless of the brand.

Some other people also suggest to copy drivers from the original Windows going with the machine.
Honestly, that's my biggest concern with these things - how to find the drivers I'll need to copy, and how do you know the drivers are safe?

The 1TB version is also available on Amazon for $370.48 if you'd rather buy through Amazon instead: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FY2LRDN3/

In many cases you don't need any additional drivers. If you do, you can sometimes source them from the chip manufacturer, for example NIC drivers from Intel.

If not, you may need to download the drivers from GMtec, and there is always a small but non-zero chance that they're not safe.

You don't need to copy the drivers from the original Windows install. Just install Windows and then install drivers if some functionality or port isn't working.

You should know that they should be intelligent enough with the help of AI to install firmware viruses that even if you wipe the drive and reinstall, it would reinstall the viruses.
True, that is possible. Not sure why you think they need the help of AI though. This has been done before, no AI involved.

Ya I'm afraid of that. It went through customs very quickly and they have a value of just $75 so probably will be fine but who knows.
