  • Humanity has colonized the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond—but the stars are still out of our reach.
  • Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for—and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.
  • Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.
  • Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations—and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.

Such a good series. The same authors are on a new series now, Captive's war. Book 2 comes out next month.

How is the new series? I know it's a completely different theme and everything, but I assume the writing, world building, and story telling are still top notch?
It was a really good opening book and they released a novella in between Book 1 and 2. I was going to re-read it and the novella for the first time before book 2 came out but started on a different series I'm now hooked into lol.

I'm 2/3rds of the way through the first audio book and can definitely recommend it. Bit of a slow start though.

It's different but in a good way. Still very character driven. The world building is, in my opinion, smaller - but that's also important to the way they tell the story itself. I would say that overall, it's less about the setting and physics, but more about the weirdness of the world that they occupy. It's very much a slow burn type book, missing the fast paced action that the expanse would give you in between longer periods of character development. If it really is only a 3 book series I'm worried they either started wayyyy too slow, or they've got longer books + a ton of novellas to fill in the gaps. It kind of felt like a prequel to the main story that we've yet to see.

If you're looking for The Expanse 2.0, look elsewhere. If you want the same style of writing, it's very much "James SA Corey"
Yeah that sums it up properly. I just felt there was a bit too much emphasis on office politics for lack of a better term. I'll read the next book in the series but as you say, they better snap it up on the story in the final two books to come up with a satisfying and hopefully exciting conclusion. That first book felt kind of like a three hour drive for half an hour on the beach,

I remember buying Leviathan Wakes as a boxed trilogy with the next two novels. An absolutely outstanding series overall. Later I ended up getting all the full size novels from the library, so free.

Loved the tv show. Do the books flesh things out more or handle things differently?
