  • Humanity has colonized the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond—but the stars are still out of our reach.
  • Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for—and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.
  • Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.
  • Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations—and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.

Such a good series. The same authors are on a new series now, Captive's war. Book 2 comes out next month.

Thanks OP.
I picked them all up and also grabbed the Audio Book on The Mercy of Gods (The Captive's War Book 1) since it was only $6.48.

Thanks OP!
Grabbed Mercy of the Gods based on really enjoying the first 3 expanse books and the novella/short stories between. Bumps the series a bit higher on my TBR.

The entire expanse series and mini-books will forever be part of my top 5 sci-fi reads. The tv series was also exceptional with great CGI and acting.

Thanks OP for the recommendation on the new series. I went ahead and bought the first book.

I didn't make it through the series the first go. Then went back and read the books and watched the series season-by-season behind each book read. That was a lot of fun!

REALLY good, though I did the audio books, like REALLY good, pretty terrifying as well in some areas but amazing characters.

Big thumbs up. I have finished the first six books, and would highly recommend the series as an exciting, yet still quite accessible, pure scifi series. I have found its gritty, near-future setting, and the limitations and problems thereof, much more relatable than the sleek, sterile, and convenient space culture of most other space settings.

How is the new series? I know it's a completely different theme and everything, but I assume the writing, world building, and story telling are still top notch?

It's different but in a good way. Still very character driven. The world building is, in my opinion, smaller - but that's also important to the way they tell the story itself. I would say that overall, it's less about the setting and physics, but more about the weirdness of the world that they occupy. It's very much a slow burn type book, missing the fast paced action that the expanse would give you in between longer periods of character development. If it really is only a 3 book series I'm worried they either started wayyyy too slow, or they've got longer books + a ton of novellas to fill in the gaps. It kind of felt like a prequel to the main story that we've yet to see.

If you're looking for The Expanse 2.0, look elsewhere. If you want the same style of writing, it's very much "James SA Corey"

The first several books were great. They started to be less engrossing towards the end.

Yea I'm debating on whether to jump on the new series now or just wait for them to finish, then start. Thankfully, they're pretty consistent with their releases...unlike some author with a 4-letter initial who shall not be named. But still, since the story was so captivating, I hated having to wait for the next book.

Anyway, if you're not into reading or, like me, don't have time, I highly recommend the audiobooks. They are very well done for this series.
