There is a war being waged against FOSS, which includes the custom ROMs you're referring to. The end game is that FOSS developers will be forced to bend the knee to the government (and by association, big tech) or die.

This isn't some grand conspiracy either, they are openly telling everybody this, and everyone is just pretending it's not really going to happen. Palantir's CEO literally said Palantir will "on occasion, kill people". This is the company that is currently harvesting data of every US citizen.
Today, Trump's FTC ruled it illegal to sell new routers without approval by the FTC. The claim/propganda is that they're protecting citizens from Chinese backdoors. In reality, they're going to force manufacturers to have backdoors for surveillance systems like Palantir, which work closely with the US/Israeli governments.
