I've gotten some good deals from aaawave. I bought this processor without the cooler from them for $290 June 25. The best deal I got was a 5700x3d for $170.

I'm tempted

I got that 5700X3D back in the day from Newegg for $180 + 32gb DDR4 Corsair memory. But the 5950 is a beast.

That 5950X looks awfully tempting at that price... I just bought a 5800XT this past May to upgrade from my 5700X3D and I'm on the verge of impulse buying this just b/c, smh...

I'll do you one better: I bought my 5700X3D (which came in an OEM tray) back in Nov 2024 from AliExpress for around $145 before the chip tariffs kicked in...

Would this be a good CPU for a workstation and sometimes gaming? Even though the socket is "dead"? Considering cost of DDR5 vs DDR4.

Yes, this CPU would def do wonders when it comes to using it for a workstation for productivity purposes. Although it's functional as a gaming CPU, just don't expect it to run neck-in-neck in gaming performance compared to its 8-core brethren since it typically gets beat.

AM4 is not dead AMD still makes processors for the platform.

I don't need a cooler, a standalone chip would be better for me.

That's besides the point since I wasn't stipulated into having to buy into a bundle just to obtain my 5700X3D. At the time I purchased mine, I already had enough DDR4 RAM for my needs.

If you're doing any kind of productivity tasks then the 5950X is the AM4 CPU to get. I currently have the 5950X paired with the 5080 GPU, and it's bottlenecking newer games. Next year, I'll be upgrading to the 9950X3D or the rumored 9950X3D2. I already have spare DDR5 ram so I'll just need the CPU and motherboard.

Not sure why you're telling me that when your comment is reinforcing the point I had originally made. That's all fine and dandy that you plan on upgrading to a 9950X3D as if that's supposed to mean anything since it's akin to aspirations. However, I did just recently build myself a new PC containing a 9900X alongside a 9070XT and 48GB of DDR5 CL30 RAM which I posted a video a/b it on my YouTube channel earlier this month if you'd like to check it out, but that's besides the point. And I also have a spare 7900X and B650E motherboard which are just sitting collecting due to current RAM prices so there's that.
