It acts like a preamplifier for people with hifi systems that have dedicated external amplification. Allows you to plug in a phono source, hdmi source, and/or stream to it with the addition of room correction. But caveat is no AirPlay.

Great straming device. Also Wiim mini on sale for $75. Have both of them - highly recommend.

So like it makes ur non google/nest devices into whole house wireless audio? And you need one of these units each for the intended speakers around the house?

This device appears to be similar to my SqueezeTouch except it has a builtin amp and a few more features.
That's great since they stopped making the SBT and I've been afraid mine would die some day.

No. This does not have a built in amplifier. That is an entirely different device.

Your server is just a bigger wiim box. The use case is better for folks who have one or two audio devices, want to better quality/connectivity when using streaming apps over bluetooth/wifi. It is simpler set up and cheaper for the better audio streaming use than a dedicated server.

Snarky answer: You don't have to plug your laptop into your amplifier via USB or HDMI, you can plug it into the Wiim instead!
Longer answer: It's an independent streaming pre-amplifier. It acts as the brains of a stereo setup, with all audio inputs connecting to the Wiim Ultra, such as your laptop, TV, record player, or what have you, and the Wiim outputs the processed audio to an amplifier or powered speakers. You can cast music or audio from streaming audio services like Spotify to play locally on the Wiim. It also can convert digital audio to analog audio and vice versa, and can stream audio inputs to other Wiim devices for multi-room audio. They also have pretty powerful room correction capabilities.

This is a really good deal for this streamer. I already have one, and paid (quite a bit!) more than this. My only complaint (which I knew ahead of time) is the lack of Apple Airplay support. Now can I talk myself into replacing the Wiim Pro in my bedroom…

Yeah, I was poking around on Amazon while looking at this and was looking at another model with an amp when I wrote that.
