not sure about the deal itself, i think i got mine scratch and dent for significantly cheaper, but if anyone has a vertical smoker that will work with this, its an absolute must buy. works so much better than their built in nonsense. you can load this up and it will provide smoke for 5 hours or more, rather than constantly refilling the puny tray they provide. you can also smoke at much lower temps, and your smoke production is independent of the smoker temps.
another thing to add.... these are often shown as not compatible with some of their models. sometimes thats because the air inlet on the side of the machine is a different size, in which case you can build an adapter, or sometimes it is simply too high or too low, in which case you just have to build up a base for either the smoker or this attachment.

This was only $54 last year on Amazon. Not exactly FP, but decent price.

This unit was discontinued for a while, then was reintroduced last year. A lot of websites still had listings for these, even though everyone had them listed as out of stock. I wonder if the $54 price was from before Masterbuilt reintroduced them. If any were actually sold at that price, it would have been one heck of a deal.

You are correct. My bad, I meant this $54 price was between July 2024 and Dec 2024, then discontinued last year. Hopefully it drops a bit. Decent price tho. Still on fence, but might still wait.

Whatever you decide, let the blue smoke roll, my friend!

I have the 40" Masterbuilt, and frankly, they should built-in standard with their smokers. I sent them an email suggesting that. I'm pretty sure people would pay a little more to have that feature included. I paid $90 more mine and don't regret it at all.

I make homemade jerky using this. I cold smoke (power/heat off in the smoker) for two hours and then put everything in a dehydrator. It's an extra step that I do skip sometimes, as you can do it all in your smoker including dehydrate, but I think the actual dehydrator does a much better job of finishing the jerky. What I make at home is so much better than store jerky. It's very easy to make too.

I also make jerky treats for our dog, no smoke, seasoning, or salt, just dried meat. Now our dog doesn't want anything else. If it's meat and tastes good to humans the dog will love it. It's way cheaper than commercial dog treats, and healthier since nothing's added. In fact, that's how I discovered making homemade jerky for "me". The first batch I made for the dog was like a light going on, amazing. It was just bottom round roast I sliced up, but man, pure beef flavor. I've switched to using pork loin (for both of us) since it's 1/3 the price of beef and she loves it just as much. Nothing beats beef, but lean pork loin is a good substitute and works great for jerky.

It's worth it at this price in my opinion.

It's no mod, no tools required with the 40" Masterbuilt. You would probably need a base with the 30".

You're right. The 30" needs the smoker to be raised since the cold smoker hangs below where the little adjustable legs that come with the smoker will raise it. 10 years ago, I called Masterbuilt to report the design problem with the cold smoker being lower than the bottom of the actual smoker and they sent me a free leg kit. I doubt that they would still do that, so YMMV. Frankly, cinder blocks would work just as well to raise the smoker unless you need the wheels on the back legs to move the smoker around. The leg kit is durable. I've been transferring it from 30" smoker to 30" smoker, just like I do with the cold smoker attachment. 10 years later, the legs, which have been exposed to the elements for a decade, are still in great shape. The kit might be worth the investment to some.
