Sta-Green Flower and Vegetable Garden Soil is a very cheap bagged option for filling beds, mixing into garden soil, or starting a few seeds when amended. The low price and pickup or delivery workarounds make it attractive, and the bags can be useful when bulk delivery is expensive. The main concern is quality, with repeated reports of wood chips, low nutrients, poor water retention, and plants being stunted or killed unless compost, perlite, peat moss, or other amendments are added. It seems best treated as a filler or base mix rather than a stand alone planting medium.

Common Questions (4)

  • Store pickup is handled at the loading zone: buy the quantity you want, bring the receipt or loading slip, and staff usually load the bags. Delivery pricing can be odd, with some carts getting $2.99 delivery for smaller quantities and free delivery sometimes requiring a weight threshold or a cart tweak.

  • It can be poor as a standalone planting mix because it may be heavy on wood chips and low in nutrients. Several people use it only after amending with compost, perlite, peat moss, coco coir, sand, or fertilizer; others report plants stunting or dying when it is used straight from the bag.

  • Yes. Some stores appear to get a better local blend, while others receive a mix that is mostly wood chips or otherwise poor quality, so results can differ by region and supplier.

  • It is not a good choice for seed starting unless it is heavily amended. The mix can be too light, woody, and low in nutrients, and poor germination or stunted seedlings are a reported risk; some people only use a small amount for seed starting after mixing it with other materials.

The Miracle Gro is complete trash too, and literally full of trash. For bagged options I've had great luck with Kellog Organic
I've never used Kellog, but I've had a lot of success with the MG over the years. Makes a world of difference to me

FoxFarm or nothing. Expensive shit at ~$30 per bag when on sale, but highly fertile.

The other day, I was able to get 11 bags of this delivered to my door same-day for only $2.99 delivery fee. Must be Lowe's Rewards member (free to join)Also, soil quality seemed fine.
Thank you! Hopefully they don't cancel my second order, but that's a lot of time/grime/back that I'll save now.

It sounds like a lot of people don't have a green thumb when it comes to gardening here. You can take just about any soil and grow in it. It's all about amending it. If you get bags of this stuff and it's the majority wood pieces you can amend it with compost, perlite, peat moss, coco coir, etc to get it to work with whatever you plan on using this with. You just need to know what your plants like/don't like. In this case a.i. is your friend. Ask questions.

Heck, a lot of people doing container gardening use 50% pine bark fines and 50% peat moss to grow plants/trees. You just have to make sure to amend the soil with fertilizer and nutrients since they aren't getting that from the pine bark/peat moss.

I buy this stuff and never had it kill everything. You need to put amendments in it and compost. This stuff has very low nutrients right out of the bag.
I did all that and it still killed everything in it or severely stunted it. Trust me, it's not my first rodeo with my garden. This garden soil was pure cr*p! i have never had an issue with MG ever so I am going back to that unless there is another better option.

I agree with most of the user comments as this stuff stand alone is not good for your plants. Mostly wood chips.
Use this as filler along with other organic compost, vermiculite and peat moss.
But good cost as some of the named brand sells similar junk for 3x price.

I just tried to order 13 bags to make it over $25 for free delivery but it wanted to charge me $39 delivery. Chatted with Lowes and was told only free if less than 300 pounds. So............................... I tried different numbers. 12 bags was still $39 delivery BUT 11 bags was only $2.99 delivery charge. I guess 11 bags are under the weight limit. I didn't think until after I ordered that I should have ordered something small like a pack of seeds to make it over $25 for free delivery.
IF you want to pay 2.99 delivery instead of picking it up, order 11 bags or less and you may be OK.

This stuff sucks, zone 8 Washington, but I do buy it this cheap just a bag or two for seed starting.
Think twice to use known bad stuff for seed starting: seeds are usually much more expensive and the lost time and/or frustration of poor germination/stunned seedlings make it far worse.

It's likely regional, I've used it for planting annuals and they've grown well the last 2-3 years.
Do you think it'd be good/ok for Minneapolis, Minnesota area?
