Stay away from this stuff, I bought 80 bags last year and it killed every plant I put into it or severally stunted it. In 20 years I never had the same issue w/ the miracle grow garden soil. Never again w/ this garbage!

Sta-Green Flower and Vegetable Garden Soil is a very cheap bagged option for filling beds, mixing into garden soil, or starting a few seeds when amended. The low price and pickup or delivery workarounds make it attractive, and the bags can be useful when bulk delivery is expensive. The main concern is quality, with repeated reports of wood chips, low nutrients, poor water retention, and plants being stunted or killed unless compost, perlite, peat moss, or other amendments are added. It seems best treated as a filler or base mix rather than a stand alone planting medium.

gardeners who plan to amend before planting because commenters say it has very low nutrients out of the bag and needs compost/amendments to work (and that it's mostly wood pieces you can amend).

people planting annuals and doing a couple of years of regular garden work because some commenters say it grew well for them over the last 2-3 years (and they also note results can be regional).
poorSAP DangerQuail
home gardeners in zone 8 Washington who only need a bag or two cheaply for seed starting because one commenter says it "sucks" there but they still buy it cheap for seed starting.
balut
homeowners using it as low-cost fill under sod/embankments because one commenter says they're using it as cheap fill where they can't get machinery delivered dirt (and they're mainly concerned about washing away, not plant nutrition).
Indus_FL
people who need bagged soil for a hilly property where moving bulk isn't practical because one commenter says bagged is best for their large, hilly lot since even a wheelbarrow isn't convenient in some areas.
turnne

gardeners who want to pour it in as a standalone planting medium because multiple commenters say it's mostly wood chips/"trash" and not good for plants unless it's rototilled/mixed in properly or heavily amended.
abhayss Mark42mc scruffylookin
buyers who want to avoid low-quality/dirty bag contents because commenters report bags being "full of trash" and another says they checked an open bag and decided not to buy because the soil was light and "not right."
AP192837 333
gardeners who don't want to deal with delivery/pickup constraints because some commenters say water/handling issues and mixing requirements cause major problems, and others report delivery pricing/free-delivery not working as expected for them.
Mark42mc cruzingmax
seed starters who are trying to germinate expensive seeds because one commenter warns that using "known bad" soil for seed starting can lead to poor germination and stunted seedlings, which is especially costly with pricier seed.
willain
people who bought lots of bags expecting consistent results because one commenter says they bought 80 bags and it killed or severely stunted every plant they put into it.
misel00

The soil can work for annuals when it is amended with compost and other inputs.
poorSAP PocketsThick
The soil has low out-of-bag nutrients, so adding amendments and compost can improve results.
Skippysqueaz PocketsThick
Store pickup can be practical because staff load the exact number of bags using a loading zone.
tcope noANANDforme
Delivery pricing can be workable for small quantities, with $2.99 delivery reported for limited bag counts.

The soil can kill plants or severely stunt growth when used as-is.
misel00 misel00
The product can be mostly wood chips, which makes it a poor standalone growing medium.
FabulousNest1285 abhayss
Delivery pricing can be inconsistent, with $39 delivery reported for higher bag counts.
tamn83 cruzingmax
Water can roll off the surface unless the material is rototilled and mixed in properly.

Common Questions (4)

Store pickup is handled at the loading zone: buy the quantity you want, bring the receipt or loading slip, and staff usually load the bags. Delivery pricing can be odd, with some carts getting $2.99 delivery for smaller quantities and free delivery sometimes requiring a weight threshold or a cart tweak.
nohomers1 tcope user129087213 user129087213
It can be poor as a standalone planting mix because it may be heavy on wood chips and low in nutrients. Several people use it only after amending with compost, perlite, peat moss, coco coir, sand, or fertilizer; others report plants stunting or dying when it is used straight from the bag.
misel00 Skippysqueaz abhayss Mark42mc
Yes. Some stores appear to get a better local blend, while others receive a mix that is mostly wood chips or otherwise poor quality, so results can differ by region and supplier.
poorSAP DangerQuail FabulousNest1285 AdamD25
It is not a good choice for seed starting unless it is heavily amended. The mix can be too light, woody, and low in nutrients, and poor germination or stunted seedlings are a reported risk; some people only use a small amount for seed starting after mixing it with other materials.

At my store, up to 6 bags can be delivered for $2.99. Great if you don't need much.

You don't even need to bring one bag to the front. The cashiers, at least in the garden area, will know the SKU to punch in based on color.

I usually walk up and say I want 20 on black and just pay. The give me a receipt and loading slip, then I drive over to the loading zone and help the guys load.

No, I call my local landscape supply store for a much better deal if I need that much. I can get my truck bed filled to overflowing with much higher quality mulch there for about $25-30. Yes, bags are slightly more convenient, but I can also back my truck up to the different places I need mulch.

I have a hilly property on a large lot....so no way that would work
In fact even a wheel barrow is not convenient in some areas of my property

So bagged is best for me

I just tried to order 13 bags to make it over $25 for free delivery but it wanted to charge me $39 delivery. Chatted with Lowes and was told only free if less than 300 pounds. So............................... I tried different numbers. 12 bags was still $39 delivery BUT 11 bags was only $2.99 delivery charge. I guess 11 bags are under the weight limit. I didn't think until after I ordered that I should have ordered something small like a pack of seeds to make it over $25 for free delivery.
IF you want to pay 2.99 delivery instead of picking it up, order 11 bags or less and you may be OK.

I got free same day delivery of 30 bags of mulch ($2/bag), 1 bag of garden soil and 1 Lowes 5gallon bucket. I was playing with my shopping cart and noticed that I could have either 11 bags of garden soil or 6 bags of mulch delivered for $2.99. I then tried 5 bags of mulch and 2 bags of garden soil and still got $2.99 delivery charge. Adding a Lowes bucket made delivery free. I then took one bag of garden soil out and added a bag of mulch to keep free delivery. After seeing that I could added one more bag of mulch and still get free delivery, I kept on adding more mulch to the shopping cart until there were 30 bags which is how much I wanted, the delivery remained free. I actually don't need the bucket, but did not want to take it off being afraid of messing up the free shipping. I am a Lowe's reward member.
