Community Reviews
The GL.iNet GL X3000 Spitz AX stands out as a fast, stable cellular gateway for home, RV, and road trip use, especially when paired with an external antenna. It is praised for an easy web interface, frequent updates, and useful controls like auto update, revert, APN, TTL, VPN, and IMEI changes. Real world results include solid 5G connections and speeds over 300 Mbps, with one setup jumping from roughly 130 Mbps to more than 450 Mbps on T Mobile. The main drawbacks are the $322.99 price and concerns about model and band differences, especially for travel outside the United States.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. It has been reported as solid, super stable, and fast, with over 300 Mbps on 5G in suburban use and much higher speeds than older cellular devices. External antennas can make a big difference in rural LTE, but even the stock antennas can deliver strong results.
It can reportedly be flashed to standard OpenWrt, but the GL.iNet firmware is already OpenWrt-based and includes an easy UI, frequent updates, and simple auto-update or revert controls. One concern raised is that any proprietary modifications would need to be released under the OpenWrt license.
It is often favored for its lower cost, simpler model selection, and easier software, while Netgear is described as expensive and confusing to shop for. Inseego's MiFi Pro line is seen as a solid portable backup, but the GL-X3000 is described as the stronger all-around cellular router.
Yes, by setting the SIM APN to fast.t-mobile.com and TTL to 64 in the web UI. That workaround can let a voice SIM work for data instead of hotspot-only usage.
Yes. The modem settings include an AT command that can change the IMEI, which can help with carrier or SIM compatibility. The device is also described as using a Qualcomm X62 modem.

Find the AT Command under the Internet SIM settings:
AT+EGMR=1,7,"123456789012345" (replace with your desired IMEI)
The GLI has a X62 Qualcomm modem and the closest real devices would be an iPhone 13/14 or Galaxy S22, A36 or Motorola Edge 2024.

Not having band n28 in the US version would hurt when traveling to EMEA as it's the rural 5G. Will need to take a closer look if the EU model matches T-Mobile bands here as I would like to keep it as global as possible. Too bad I missed the early bird sale.

Mifi M3000B (T-Mobile) model is as global as needed when unlocked.

When I use to root and rom my phones, it was pretty straightforward to bypass hotspot by changing TTL. Couldn't I still do that or use a different method like VPN tunnels or apps? I'm sure this router would be more powerful and flexible, but I have free T-mobile phones like Moto Edge 2024 and Pixel 10 and only need a small network. Am I missing something obvious, like maybe phone hotspot only works for a couple hours or have a limit on connected devices?
Maybe Merlin only supports certain devices. Next would be to try openwrt or ddwrt. But I hate the GUI in those and struggle to get the basics working.
