Note, mine also had an extra NVMe slot inside, so you can add another drive (I did) with little effort. The back cover comes of nice and clean with screws - easy to upgrade.
Too bad the RAM is not upgradable... it's soldered and there are no slots.
Still, a great machine, especially at this price!
These LGs feel far more solid, and are "MIL STD" tough, whatever that means. That said, they feel solid and super light, yet very fast and powerful. They cost more than the HP but I feel it's worth it. And at this price with 16GB RAM, it's a great deal for a larger-screen laptop (I paid $600 for mine a few years ago... and it's going strong with by brother-in-law).
Depends on what you need for college. Some colleges are finicky about what you get, in which case you can be stuck with dumb requirements that make no sense. I'm an engineer by training and have seen colleges require high power laptops just because they plan to do some CAD. I did CAD on the UltraPC with no issues... sure, I'm not doing monster assemblies in Solidworks, but I can work on subassemblies and such without issue, and can view them without issue as well.
For non-engineering use, this machine would be great. The LGGram I replaced it with is a little more (because it's a little lighter) and has more RAM (32GB) which is why I got it... and it has an Intel CPU (Ultra 7) which has better raw CPU power, but the AMD felt faster overall for anything I threw at it.
In summary, I think these are great laptops, feel sturdy, and at this price a 16GB RAM machine will likely be great for most people... a great deal IMO (after all, I paid more for it and still loved it!)

AI is a joke and a waste of energy - I've tried to use it multiple times, and it's often flat-out-wrong. That said, you can continue to run Win11 as it is today and not worry about it too much... I can't imagine 16GB will be a problem in the next "few years". Hell, my old HPs still work fine, even updated to today's Win11 and 8GB RAM.
For anyone that asks me, I recommend 16GB for such a machine in general. Many other sources suggest 8GB which is doable as well, as long as you keep it simple overall, and the price is good. You can find 8GB machines for under $300 which are great if that's all you need. I feel this machine would be overkill for the tasks you describe... an 8GB with 256GB drive would be sufficient... web browsing (stop using Chrome/Edge) and Excel are very light weight in general.

But, my "better" LG gram has an Intel 7 155H CPU, which should be a lot faster: https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-com...en-5-7530u
But, again, it FEELS slower for day-to-day usage. It boots MUCH slower too.
The AMD will likely give you longer battery life, if that's important... it helps explain the difference in the specs (LG has a bigger battery, but also the more efficient AMD).
In the end, both are probably quite good, I would lean LG today. I've never had an ASUS laptop, but they have made the best desktop motherboards for decades, so I imagine they know what they're doing. But a laptop requires the rest of the build, too... so I can't say for sure. ASUS is the next one on my list to try out, but I'm damn happy with my LGs so far. I wish they'd make a 64GB RAM AMD version!
