The disadvantage is that the new Intel CPUs are being released on a totally dead platform socket, whereas the 7900X can be directly upgraded to current top level Zen 5 as well as upcoming Zen 6. There have also been vague hints that Zen 7 may also end up on AM5, depending upon the status of the AI bubble by time of its release.

The disadvantage is that the new Intel CPUs are being released on a totally dead platform socket, whereas the 7900X can be directly upgraded to current top level Zen 5 as well as upcoming Zen 6. There have also been vague hints that Zen 7 may also end up on AM5, depending upon the status of the AI bubble by time of its release.
Just note, if your primary goal is gaming, definitely go* the X3D chips instead. They are a massive improvement, especially when I moved to the 9800X3D.

If you just need a NAS, there's no reason to go with a 12-core CPU.
If you're using it for Plex, an Intel CPU would probably be more appropriate, given their better Plex support.
Just note, if your primary goal is gaming, definitely got the X3D chips instead. They are a massive improvement, especially when I moved to the 9800X3D.
TLDR with the way things have gone the last 4-5 years it's probably prudent to wait a little on Intel to show it's not a fluke.

I bought a 13700K like 35 days before that happened and was just outside of return policy, spent the next couple years regretting the timing even if it was a fine chip until it degraded last summer.
