I really don't need this at all for any reason, probably slightly worse than my 7700 for gaming at that... but I still am really tempted...

$40 cheaper than earlier deal posted today. This is one of the best deals I've seen on a Ryzen cpu. With the new Ultra Plus Intels being released, all these ridiculously overpriced AM5 Ryzens will probably start coming down quite a bit..

The disadvantage is that the new Intel CPUs are being released on a totally dead platform socket, whereas the 7900X can be directly upgraded to current top level Zen 5 as well as upcoming Zen 6. There have also been vague hints that Zen 7 may also end up on AM5, depending upon the status of the AI bubble by time of its release.

That should be fine. The most this chip will pull is around 220 watts, but when gaming it was closer to 90-150 watts. I was running this chip with a power hungry AMD RX 6950XT which pulls upwards of 330W, was around 550W from the UPS device when gaming. The 5070 TI is more efficient so you'd be fine.

Just note, if your primary goal is gaming, definitely go* the X3D chips instead. They are a massive improvement, especially when I moved to the 9800X3D.

Buyer beware, the new Plus SKUs do depend on PPP and BOT for decent performance. Devs rightly opted not to adapt their software to the Arrow Lake architecture, so Intel has to intercept calls with software abstraction. Intel has a history of poor software longevity. Nova Lake is 8 months away, and will not depend on PPP and BOT as heavily. The prices are right for the Plus SKUs, but expect AM5 to shift down to better value positions. This 7900X will remain settled at $200, with 7600X / 9600X around $100-125, and 7700X / 9700X around $150-175. If you really need the 7900X grunt, I'd maybe look for 9900X at $250. If you go Intel, choose your board carefully, the Intel partners were getting killed with poor Arrow Lake sales, and many of the boards are cost down. Also, the Intel SKUs need better DDR5.

Yes, it's a virtualization-ready CPU, so you can either run it as a host server with VMs, or natively. It's probably overkill for most home needs unless you're running something like a web server or transcoding video.

If you just need a NAS, there's no reason to go with a 12-core CPU.

If you're using it for Plex, an Intel CPU would probably be more appropriate, given their better Plex support.

Great thanks. I am upgrading my pc to run local LLMs.

Agreed, big step in the right direction for Intel but not quite their Ryzen 1000 moment yet. Even with AMD it wasn't until Ryzen 2000 that they started to deliver on the potential and took another gen to the 3000 line to really bring it all together. I'd want to at least wait for that and to see what AMD does in response price wise. Even more recently with 13th gen launch (which was a similar same tech refresh) Intel was ahead on price to performance (in exchange for terrible efficiency) and then AMD dropped the 7000 series prices and blew that all up. I bought a 13700K like 35 days before that happened and was just outside of return policy, spent the next couple years regretting the timing even if it was a fine chip until it degraded last summer.

TLDR with the way things have gone the last 4-5 years it's probably prudent to wait a little on Intel to show it's not a fluke.

It will be way overkill but would give a good amount of capability to run a bunch of VMs and such if you were planning to get into a really heavy stack. The main downsides if you're not using it to its potential will be the higher cost of the platform, higher energy consumption, and DDR5 being insane at the moment. Even before RAM went insane a lot of people in the home server space were gravitating towards 12600K and 14600K because they have DDR4 platforms and quick sync support for video encoding and were going for a song, though availability on those looks quite poor right now and prices are definitely elevated. Really not a good time at all to be doing a home server unless you're just looking to upgrade your CPU or platform, even HDDs are 2-3x what they were three months ago and it sounds like every manufacturer has already sold through their capacity for several years.
