Personally I'm not sure I believe the specifications of this. The power of the diode is 2.5w. When they say it's perfect for engraving material like acrylic, you need to watch out for gotchas like - acrylic (black) as normally people want to engrave and cut clear acrylic. Rings are normally made from metals that reflect most of the energy when engraved. I would personally use a Fiber Laser for what you are trying to do.

Finally - I wouldn't buy this because:
- 2.5 is low power
- I still would recommend far better eye protection that is offered here.
- Air assist really helps engravers maintain clear markings. There is none here.

I just don't want people thinking they are getting something they aren't.

Diode laser engraver can engrave wood, some acrylic, leather, fabric and slate. It can engrave powder coated metal too by burning away the coating. It might be able to mark, not engrave, a metal ring but it won't be deep and you might have to coat it first. To really engrave a metal ring, you would need a fiber laser. UV lasers can engrave into brass pretty well and also mark metal but fiber is the way to go for other metals. Also, to engrave a ring, you would also want a rotary device that would turn the ring as it etched because the distance from the lens to the metal as to be constant.

I once bought a Rosewill multi-card reader that died after a month and I will never miss an opportunity to tell everyone about it.

As someone with access to an overpowered laser engraver at the local library which also has a rotary roller, I wonder what kind of results people are actually getting with tumblers and other cylindrical items on these basic models without a rotary roller. (Note that the listing includes such items on display)

One of my primary use cases has been laser engraving my kids' thermoses with a name and phone number. Every so often I'll buy a tumbler as a gift.

Good luck!
Jon

Difference between laser engravers:

Diode lasers (This listing): Compact, cheap, suited for engraving and cutting wood, non-transparents plastics, can engrave only anodized aluminum or stainless steel and no other metals, not suited for cutting metal.

CO2 lasers: Usually big (CO2 laser tube, water chiller), even better and faster for cutting wood, can engrave transparent plastics, no effect on metal.

Fiber lasers: Can engrave all kinds of metal, plastic. Poor effect on wood.

Would this device do the trick?

There was one customer picture and it looked like when you use a magnifying glass on a piece of balsa wood, but a much thinner line. Did not inspire confidence.

These are pretty dangerous unless you have a few additional bits of protection. A general cover with a vac for fumes and eye protection are the bare minimum. You can get engravers with all that included for a similar price if you were to piecemeal it.

I can't speak on this one specifically, but I've been researching these and my understanding is that it will engrave/burn through the paint, but it won't actually touch the metal
