Read over the specs, trying to figure out if this requires drives to be formatted in a certain file system or can existing drives be used. Anyone have experience with these DAS enclosure?

I have this. Existing drives can be used. I don't recommend this, however, because the fan is not user serviceable and it runs 24/7 even when your PC is off and the drives are sleeping the audible fan keeps running. If you have this DAS in a network closet or away from your PC fine, but within earshot it's annoying.

You can have them in any format for the most part. It just depends on the device you are using them with.

I have a DAS setup as a cold storage device for my backup of movies/games.

I have it plugged in via USB-C to my Windows computer. I just drag and drop files on to it, it saves, then I disconnect. Until I build up some more storage on my main drive on the PC and do it all again.

Windows devices are pretty good about seeing the hard drives. But if they were pulled from a NAS in an array, I can see it not working.

If anyone wants a DAS with nvme support, the TERRAMASTER D8 Hybrid is on sale for $225 instead of $300 on Amazon.
4 HDD and 4 m.2 nvme, pci 3.0 x4. With a single 3.2 Gen 2 usb-c 10gbps. No daisy chaining.

I have had a Terramaster D6 for a few years and just ordered my 2nd one. Got it originally on sale for $240 and its currently $240 again. I have had zero issues. its quiet and just runs. i run it to a windows machine where i run StableBit DrivePool. This app itself keeps me on windows because i like it so much. i can mix and match drive sizes and it duplicates data in case a drive fails (yes i run separate backups also). All drives in the terramaster via drivepool show up as one drive.

I don't have this model, but a similar 4 bay USB-C enclosure. You can use any file system you want.

Exact same setup except I bought a D4. I tried a few other options but DrivePool did exactly what I needed while being the most flexible and simple. I've got 4 x 14TB array mostly for editing projects, and it's great being able to easily specify how many levels of duplication I want depending on the folder (ie important documents are 3x, video projects are 2x, scratch files and easily recreated or replaced files are 1x, all with my own daily rsync to AWS). Because of how it works (arranging files on regular readable volumes vs custom formatting) I could pick up and read the drives/DAS on another PC with no data loss or rebuild needed.

Thinking of getting this to run JBOD. Fair idea? Better way? Can always expand with daisychain...

Not sure if anyone is planning get this for proxmox or not, but I wouldn't recommend it. I got it and within a week my drives started having "read/write errors", randomly not being found. I would boot up the server and the DAS was causing it to hang on boot. If I unplug it and plug it back in after proxmox loaded one or two of the drives wouldn't be found. Eventually I sent it back and got the Cenmate 4 bay and haven't have another issue since then. It recognized all the drives immediately and worked like nothing was missing.

I do have a number of 4-bay DAS's and I filled them with 14TB enterprise drives a few years ago. I did this before the high prices for stuff is today. Prices are terrible now, but if you have a number of large enterprise drives these are pretty good. I DO NOT USE RAID! That way I can remove any drive in DAS, and put in any other PC, or store it in closet.
What I do is only turn my DAS on for a few minutes and then turn it off 99.5 percent of the time. I use the DAS for backup/transfer and load what I need on my 4TB SSD/NVMe storage on main PC. (I don't have to worry about heat or anything , since I just use device as only 1 of my backup solutions.
I use Alexa to turn on the device and turn off the device. Everybody uses these in way that works for them. I just find external 4TB NVMe's a better way to get very fast transfer/backup, then a few times a month might use DAS as second method of backup, with 3rd method of backup in closet in safe place.
I did buy before the prices when up, 2 26TB Seagate externals for 250 dollars a piece, as a backup too. Maybe when storage goes back to realistic prices ... I will buy another hard drive. You have choices on what currently works for you.

Just ordered one. Nice upgrade for me as I am using an older Thunderbolt 2 that I have been using an adapter. I was thinking of upgrading to PCIe SSD drives but that's a no way with the high price these days. I'll keep my WD Drive.
Does anyone know if it's hot swap?

This is a great caveat and literally the reason why I bought the prior-generation Orico 4-bay drive enclosure with USB 3.2 Gen 1 since that 5Gbps speed capacity still isn't a bottleneck for 7200rpm hard drives. The prior generation has a physical rocker switch and totally turns off the enclosure with its fan. This is useful to me also for putting a smart plug on all my external drives, able to remotely turn my storage pool on and off and leaving the rocker switch on (whereas an electronic switch defaults to off upon restoration of power).

The Terramaster hybrid makes a hell of a lot less sense; USB 3.2 Gen. 2 at 10 Mbps is a terrible bottleneck to NVMe speeds.
