These have the bitter coating on them to prevent children and pets from swallowing them. The coating can be removed by lightly sanding it off, or wiping it off with rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.

These don't have a coating on the entire battery anymore. They have a ring of blue dots around the edge. It will stain your hands when you touch it. If you don't get ones with a ring of blue dots then you got either old batteries or counterfeits.

From their faq: the bitterant and Color Alert formula is being updated to the positive side of the battery in a full dotted circle but in some cases you can still find it on the negative side of the battery as a dotted rainbow. Both enable performance and device compatibility.

5 year shelf life seems awfully low. The energizers here advertise 12 years. Alkaline batteries advertise longer than that.

Yeah... I've stopped purchasing from PowerMax and other places like that and only buy Energizers when they go on sale. I've stockpiled enough and will start ordering again 4 years from now. Haha.
