The 42mm is the size of the front lens. The bigger it is, the more light it lets in and the brighter the picture you see. If you go up in magnification, you need to go up with the size of the front lens. The 10x equivalent of a 8x42 would be roughly a 10x50. I wouldn't go with anything less than 50 with 10x binoculars. In short, the 10x42 produces a darker image than the 8x42.

More field of view, easy to spot flying birds. It's a personal preference. I prefer 10x42 for birding where I live, since the birds are further out.

Sounds like they believe the 10x magnification on these might be a little too zoomy and harder to get a good steady view of a bird.

For most people, the Bushnell H2O 8x42 is the better all-around choice because it gives a wider field of view and is easier to hold steady, while the 10x42 gives more reach but is more sensitive to shake. The 8x42 version also has a wider field of view in the B&H comparison: 350 ft at 1,000 yd vs 305 ft at 1,000 yd for the 10x42.

Magnification is higher than 7 or 8 is difficult to hold still.

The 42mm lens on both means the 8x will have nicer image. A 10x need 53mm lens to be equivalent which will make it larger and heavier.

These are heavy. If you want more portability, go for 8x25 which are also on sale.

10x42 can also do 8x magnification. Just don't turn all the way up. 10x42 is only heavier than 8x42. I don't see a point to debate which one is stable.

I think he means they can focus on something closer? doesnt change field of view, may not help with shake much either.

I love 10x42mm I feel like the advantages are overrated for a 8x42mm unless you are older and can't stabilize them well. Most adults would be fine with 10x zoom no problem.
