Synology's 4 bay DiskStation stands out for its polished DSM software, strong backup tools, and solid performance for home storage, Plex, and photo libraries. The DS925 plus brings more RAM headroom, dual 2.5 gigabit Ethernet, faster read and write speeds, and expansion support, while the DS425 plus is attractive for Plex because its Intel Celeron has Quick Sync. The main cautions are Synology's drive and SSD compatibility restrictions, higher total cost once RAM and disks are added, and the fact that the DS925 plus lacks a GPU for transcoding. It is a capable platform, but the value depends heavily on the workload and storage budget.
Common Questions (5)
Synology's newer units have used drive-compatibility restrictions, and third-party HDDs or SSDs can lose features if they are not on the approved list. The restriction has also been walked back and can reportedly be bypassed with a script, but Synology-branded SSDs are still required for some cache or storage-pool use cases on certain models.
The DS425+ is the better Plex host because its Intel Celeron J4125 has Quick Sync and an iGPU. The DS925+ uses a Ryzen V1500B with no GPU, so it is less suited for hardware transcoding.
For photo/video backups, file sharing, PC backups, and VPN access, the DS425+ can be enough if you are not running Plex, Docker, or VMs. The DS925+ is more capable and may be worth the extra $100 if you want more RAM, faster networking, and expansion headroom.
The DS425+ ships with 2GB of RAM, and Synology Photos advanced features like object detection require 4GB. That means you may need to add memory, which reduces the price advantage versus the DS925+.
No. The DS925+ is listed at $512 plus about $12 shipping, so the real out-the-door price is closer to $524 before drives.

My only issue now is the new NAS drives I'm trying to buy. I missed the black Friday deal cuz I was hoping cyber Monday was going to have the same deals if not better but as soon as midnight hit, all the BF deals were gone and everything was either full price or OOS. I had the drives and this ds925+ in my cart waiting for Cyber Monday.
Western digital is now under a contract to make their drives for enterprise thru 2027 so most of them are full price, way way over priced to people ripping others off or OOS.

Given this use case, is the DS425+ good enough? It would be great to save the extra $100 for disks if the performance difference isn't worth it for my situation.
