Ugreen is China, Synology is Taiwan. Something to consider if you're concerned with the privacy of your data.

I have both Synology and Ugreen. If you're going to use the included OS, Synology is the better option. If you're willing to install a different system like TrueNAS or unRAID, go with some other option than Synology. My ugreen unit has been great.

It's ridiculous to support Synology after they've openly disrespected their customers—essentially giving them the middle finger—just because they're a Taiwanese company.

I think it's various things, but the thing that has people most upset is that they're basically trying to force you into buying Synology-branded drives for their newer units. Units from 2025 onward (IIRC) basically have a whitelist of approved drives. If you stick in a drive that's not Synology-branded or not on the approved list, you lose features. (At one point, the list contained only Synology-branded drives, but I don't know if that's changed or not.)

You can work around it (https://www.xda-developers.com/i-...trictions/), at least in theory, but it's been widely viewed as a stupid, anti-consumer move on their part.

That (HDD branding being important) was all removed months and months ago.

I'm running Unraid and also running some Synology boxes. My only issue with Unraid is performance: yes, you can put what they call "Cache" in front of shares for writes over SMB, but writes go to one disk, not a RAID set - I see anywhere from 50 to 70MB/s on my (older, granted) Unraid disks; my (older, but not as old) Synology does 250-300MB/s (I'm on 2.5GBe).
7.2 now brings a few changes to this model, so I'm going to need to check it out, but classic Unraid's cool feature (just add disks anytime you want) is also a downside - performance.

I've always heard of them as being the company that you don't have to SSH into their boxes to fix broken stuff. Now they're going out of their way to be the one that you have to SSH into to fix broken stuff. If I wanted to hack away at the OS, wouldn't I just buy something cheaper, like a Terra Master, and install a custom OS on it?

Gotta save those extra 20 pennies in licensing costs.

I think a large part of the benefit of Synology is the OS and the applications they include.
For example, Synology Backup for Business is fantastic, fast, works well, and saves me 50% of my backup space at last check with deduplication. Synology Backup for M365 is a very cool feature for a small business with an M365 environment to back up.

If you're already comfortable with a command line, then UGreen is fine - I've talked someone from 'just getting it out of the box' all the way to 'fully running Plex - Radarr - Sonarr - much more' Plex ecosystem on Ugreen; it works great and just takes a few more docker-compose yaml files.
