These have the bitter coating on them to prevent children and pets from swallowing them. The coating can be removed by lightly sanding it off, or wiping it off with rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.

Unless you're determined to, for whatever reason, try or ingest the battery... why would you want to remove the coating?Just curious why you provided that info lol

The coating can, in certain situations and devices, cause connection issues.

Just add salt, pepper, and garlic and you got yourself a nice little snack. Wait...what's the point in removing the bitterant agent again?

Never heard of that but I suppose if a little moisture or something got into your keyfob, it might gum up the connection between the battery contacts and the surface of the battery

These are a different size, but sometimes my AirTags won't work with one of these unless I remove the coating (on a fresh battery and a clean AirTag, no moisture necessary)). I imagine there are other devices like that.

It's extremely common. For example, this line of batteries are usually avoided for AirTags - because people don't want to sand their batteries just to use them and they don't work at all out of the package
