Scott's spreader are notorious for terrible spreading and creating goofy looking lines on your lawn after the application sets in.

Because of the wheels

Because of the wheels
Specifically, the inside half of the wheel is not filled in (it's just half a wheel with no cap on the other side), so seed collects in the wheel and pours out 3-4x the normal amount in the area where the wheel is. That can burn out your yard in stripes, or in the best case create stripes of really dark grass (in a bad way)

Don't buy this unless you want your yard to have stripes like a tiger

People have filled the wheels with cardboard or spray foam and say it mostly fixes the problem.

I wish one of them would make a mini size like Scott's does.

I was blaming the 'edgeguard' piece too. I took mine out and haven't had any striping since.

This is just a partial fix. The rotating part of spreader (not sure what it's called but the horizontal disc that catches and spreads the seeds/fertilizer) is lower than the wheel. This causes uneven distribution as the seeds hit the wheel and bounce around.
