Good deal. The RAM alone is worth $300 or more.

The power supply is only 280 watts, which severely limits GPU options (and may be limited to PCIe slot power, I'm not sure?). However the 780M integrated GPU is quite good for low to mid 1080p gaming.

note that PSU and probably some of the parts are proprietary so this is more like a giant mini pc

Except no one in their right minds would buy RAM for $300.

I mean if you need it you need it. I think most sane people who don't absolutely need it are just waiting.

Except that's literally the market price for 32GB of DDR5 today (there abouts) and plenty of people are buying them.

Exactly - it's a commodity. Nobody wants to pay $4/gallon for gas either, but if you have no choice there you go.
I'm hoping the recent Google LLM improvement announcements mean there'll be some easing up on the RAM supply.

Why you transcoding in 2026? Everything I would stream my Plex server too can already play all the formats! You can always add one of these https://www.ebay.com/itm/298041186469

The supply is all preordered and prepaid till 2028! There is little chance it will let up for the next 2 years! Even if they don't need it anymore the contracts are already signed!

I download the movies to my phone and I just don't have enough space. I also want to use frigate. The ARC GPU has 225W. I don't think that this PC PSU here would be able to bear that?

know one knows. Maybe there is a big mistrust coming into the AI sector - finding out that no one is really willing to spend so much for AI products to justify the high costs. Then datacenters need to shut down and sell their hardware?

Actually asked AI if this is a valid scenario and gemini pro said "Yes, this is an entirely valid scenario." 😂

Even though most devices can play most formats through direct play transcoding is still very useful for streaming over limited bandwidth (eg plex server to your phone) or space savings for client side downloads (eg air travel).

Yes AI could collapse but the contracts are signed for the manufacture of the HBM chips that are for AI not the DDR5-7 chips good for personal computing. I do hope that the PC industry just diverts CPU/motherboards/GPU architecture to use HBM. The consumers would get better performing products ( a bot more expensive though but nothing like what we are seeing now) and then the industry can just make one kind of chip for everyone.

I have had a Plex server for the last 10 years and never used any transcoding. To be fair I am not watching any full length anything on my phone either on my phone I'll catch some YT or tiktok or other time wasters. If I am not at home I am usually doing something so don't have the time to watch a feature film. I do the usual sitting at the doctors office for 20 minutes waiting to be called or waiting in the car for 20 minutes for someone but sitting for hours watching a movie isn't the norm for me and if I was going to do some international traveling I would download whatever to my tablet or just watch the airline provided screen and enjoy some Netflix or Hulu or one of the streaming services provide by the airline of which there are plenty of choices available but that's just me. Maybe If I am really really into some series at the moment I would want to watch that on the plane then I would just download it to my phone. My phone has 1tb of storage so plenty of room for whatever and I wouldn't need to worry about a good wifi signal then. My server is connected to a 10GB home network and a 1GB upp/dpwn speeds for internet and my phone can decode anything I want to stream so the need for transcoding just seems to be going away in the last 10 years IMO. I just don't store any movies in files large enough to need more than GB speeds to transfer, prolly nothing that needs even 25% of that really.
