I have liked most of orico's products, but keep in mind this is a dock, not a enclosure. i.e. no protection at all for your drives. While SSD's do fit, it technically bottlenecks them (1 gbps slower, theoretically).

For most people it is safer to just have each drive in its own enclosure, unless you just have a lot of drives.

and in today's market, thats a lot of $$$. Replacement costs surely outweigh just having separate enclosures for safety.

this to me is a better deal. It comes out a little bit cheaper, but it actually has a cover. if you hate it that much, just dont use it, but at least one exists for you to use.

You are right, it's the same thing WITH a lid, and cheaper at $16.98 at amazon.com/ORICO-Toolfree-External-Enclosure-Support/dp/B00GAML7OK/ref=ast_sto_dp_pu

This is a very handy device for someone who has to deal with a lot of different hard drives on a short-term basis, like someone who works in IT, computer repair, or data recovery.

Been buying Orico's HDD Docks for years, no complaints. That being said, I would much rather have a dual-bay/bit-for-bit copier. They do make them, though they cost a little more.

I am looking for something like this that is reliable and supports larger drives. Some of the reviews seems to indicate that the device does not last that long. If not these, are there better options?

I have a few of these external docs. The docks haven't had issues, but none of these have any active cooling. I don't think there is any theoretical limitations on Sata 3 that you might hit anytime soon, but the problem is actually the power draw; some of the larger drives can take more power, some say around 25w to start the platter spinning, especially if they are 7200rpm or higher versions. Most of the adapters only provide up to 2A, so 12V@2A=24W... not saying it cant start the drive, but its possibly pushing the higher end of power through the boards and stuff. This may be the reason for the "early failure".

That said, their advertisement for the unit is funny. It says up to 24tb, but then in one of the images, it shows a 30tb... worse yet, its a 30TB SAS drive and then says "universal compatibility". ...

Now if it were true that this dock supported SAS to USB, this would actually be a good deal...

I have one of these and it has really come in real handy a few times. I have a stack of 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives (including a few 10,000 RPM) that I have used with this dock. Transfer rates will be really slow using any SATA drive and as long as you realize that you will be satisfied.

Thanks for the insight. I did find it pretty funny that everyone is showing a WD Red drive as their example. I know mounting it as a standard drive (e.g. think a boot drive) is problematic, or at least it was in the past where you had to potentially cover pins. Well I have a Red drive that I want to use, so something good to try this on.

I guess if you want multiple drive you need a NAS or are their reliable USB type devices that support multiple drives. Most I have seen get marginally mid to higher reviews.. Ahy suggestions?

Those are considered DAS- Drive array storage. I'd recommend getting one that at least supports usb 3.2 and possibly thunderbolt. Remember, a single SATA drive tops out at 6gbps, (SSD's included). so you really want USB 3.2. (so you have some throughput head space in case your reading from drive to drive or two drives at once).

There's a few out there, I'd recommend you at least look at one that has active cooling. There are ones with other features (JBOD/raid/etc) built into them, but I haven't (nor wanted to) play with those. Get at least a 3 bay, makes for better ZFS if you want to, and you can also chuck in your older hard drives you arent using to get a second life on them.

If you want, you can get hardware raids on these enclosures and they use less bandwidth (controller does the splitting work, gains are especially more noticeable in a mirror )
