It's not exactly random, Firebat is not bad and I see it a lot. I've got 2 different systems from them before, one was perfect 100%, the other one had funny Windows with funny "addons" that triggered all antiviruses and Malwarebytes. So I nuked it and re-installed, looks good now.

Very good deal for the specs!

Perfect for homme, office, emulation and light PC gaming.
Having x2 m.2 ports means that you could sacrifice one to add an m.2 adapter and use an eGPU for a massively better gaming performance.
Soldered RAM is the only bummer, BUT 16gb is plenty and I think that is the reason that these are so cheap, which is a win.

most people realize 32gb of ram costs about as much as this whole damn thing these days.

This Ryzen 5 6600H mini PC stands out as a strong budget box for home office work, emulation, light gaming, Proxmox, and media use, with performance well above N100 minis and enough muscle for multiple VMs or a desktop replacement. The dual M.2 layout and 16GB soldered DDR5 are the big draws, and the quad channel memory layout is even seen as a performance boost. Main cautions are the non upgradeable RAM, possible HDMI limits for 4K 120Hz use, and repeated reports of a dirty Windows image that should be wiped and reinstalled. A capable low cost pick if the fixed memory and setup hassle are acceptable.

  • The mini PC can support Proxmox with 1-2 VMs for homelab and self-hosting workloads.

    kydarcowdog360

  • The second NVMe slot can help expand storage later by adding another NVMe drive.

    ECarlsonNoDa

  • The deal can include an extra $35 discount when promo code USCD35 applies at checkout.

    kydar

  • The dual M.2 design can enable using one slot for an adapter and an eGPU setup for better gaming performance.

    ghostfreckle

  • The preinstalled Windows 11 image can contain malware detections and may require wiping and reinstalling from a clean source.

    uncanny_valleyNoDaNoDa

  • The RAM can be permanently soldered, which prevents upgrading beyond the included 16GB.

    kydarThriftyThread5737WiseField749

  • The HDMI output claims can be misleading for high-refresh Moonlight streaming because HDMI may only support 4K60.

    ibuythingshereibuythingshere

  • Hardware issues can occur on arrival, including a loose screw that could short components and a defective unit after about one hour.

Can I run Proxmox on this?
That's what I'm planning to do. Claude says it's plenty powerful enough to run Proxmox and 1-2 VMs. The limiting factor is the nonupgradeable RAM

it says output is hdmi 2.1 but can only do 4K 60? I'm trying to buy something to use moonlight game streaming from my main PC to living room, but i want to do 4K 120hz. I thought hdmi 2.1 can do 4k 120hz.
More than likely due to the integrated graphics. Just like USB 3.2 is supposed to be 20Gbps, but will be limited on the hardware/chips that are being used.

but it says it can do 4K160hz via displayport, just not via HDMI2.1? even though HDMI2.1 can do 120hz

Claude is being dumb. You can run way more than 2 VMs. Or fewer than 1. It depends on the OS's and workloads. Either way, this thing should have no issues running Proxmox.

To generalize, the biggest issue with this device and self hosting would be the iGPU. You will have trouble passing through an iGPU to a VM either way. But if you do run PleX on the Proxmox host, or within a LXC container, Intel is better for transcoding video. Yes, the AMD iGPUs are much more powerful. But the Intel iGPUs are better supported for transcoding video.

The second biggest issue is the soldiered RAM. 16 GiB is plenty for a ton of things. But odds are you could fit even more services on the system if you added more RAM. That fact that its soldiered means that if you want more RAM in the future, you buy a new machine. But if 16 GiB is plenty for your needs, and it may be, then this isn't an issue at all.

They are Realtek NICs. But that doesn't exclude them from running OPNsense. If you want full compatibility, install Proxmox then run OPNsense as a vm. Then you can run it as both your router and other VMs like Home Assistant on the same box. Otherwise a bare metal install of OPNsense will likely run fine. It's when you try running something like Zenarmor on it that you might have some issues. There is a conundrum of running a router on a VM some people have a real adversity to and I did myself. But after doing it on 2 installs, I haven't had any issues after 2 years.

I always do a clean install on any computer I purchase. Partitions, the whole nine.

Keep in mind an N100 is far more power efficient so these two are almost on opposite ends of the spectrum. If you have a use case that is low compute, like running Home Assistant, you're better off with an N100 even with less RAM. This is definitely better though if you're going to run a whole bunch of VMs all the time, or even a desktop replacement sort of use case.
