This is a good option, but also use the old fashioned, non-battery circuit tester. Never trust just one option when you're testing for electricity.

Also, when you use this, test it on an outlet that you know is on, to make sure that it is working properly, then test it on the outlet that you think has been turned off.


If you plan to do more DIY in your house and want to spend more, something like the Klein Digital Circuit Breaker finder is excellent for figuring out what circuit a given electrical outlet/switch is connected to in your panel. It can save you a lot of running up and down stairs, or shouting to someone at the circuit box, if the circuits are not well labeled in a house.

I was confused using mine initially because it said no contact, till I realized you have to put the prong into the outlet. In case anyone didn't know

Every home owner should have this. The only other one to look out for is a plug in tester that has a buzzer you can turn on so you can make it make noise and then turn off breakers until it's off. Back in the day you would plug in a radio and turn up the volume but nowadays everything is batteries.

It's two separate tools. The pen-shaped one is the non-contact voltage detector, for seeing if outlets, wires, or switches are live. The plug-in tester confirms outlets are wired correctly.

I use the pen hanging ceiling fans and it saved me at least the shock of my life, I had accidentally left the breaker on but fortunately I was using that pen to test the wires. I'll buy this set and give the pen away. I don't have the other tool. Thanks!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you plug in the outlet tester in a non-GFCI outlet, and hit the button on the device, wouldn't it kill the breaker for that circuit?

I was taught to test both before and after turning off the breaker. Before to make sure the tool is working and you're using it correctly on the wires, after to actually make sure the power is off.

You'd think so but no. The tester makes a very small imbalance between hot and ground. It's not a true short which would be unsafe. It shouldn't trip a actual breaker.

With that said it will trip a upstream GFCI, which should happen if the upstream one is working properly.

$5 voltage tester and $7 outlet at Harbor Freight. Even cheaper combined with coupon.

Might as well throw in a $8 multimeter.

This is a horrible deal.

You should be able to find the GFCI tester tool individually, for much cheaper. You don't need to buy this combo.

The pen tester is great, really worth having if you do any electrical work. Great to double check that wires are really dead before starting work.
