A new M5 with the same RAM/storage/screen is $1299. Not sure how this is originally "$1699". No sane person would pay $400 extra for previous gen processor.

Not a great deal IMO. $50 more you can get factory refurbished from Apple w/1 year warranty and you know it's gone thru correctly. Factory refurbished from Apple is like new.

Whenever I see refurb items in excellent condition available in quantity, I have to ask myself why the original owners made them available so soon after purchase. Were they not performing to expectations? Did a new shiny come out that they wanted instead?

Imagine having 256 gb of storage on a laptop in 2026.

The Neo is cheaper. If all you have as a student is ~$500, that extra $379 might not be in the budget at all.

Now with all that out of the way, this isn't a bad machine at all - if it wasn't a garage sale used unit. 16gb/256gb is the base configuration. You're pretty much just buying it for the 15" size.

For a 2 year warranty this isn't bad. Although for those who can wait, it's better to wait until the 16/512 GB M4 is below 900

I spent this much on my M2 MacBook Air and that only has 8gb/256gb and it is my go to laptop, even over my Alienware 32gb/3tb. Anytime I take a trip it's the first one I grab. The battery life, the portability and weight, it's no contest. And there's even plenty of games it can run just fine. Civ 6/7 are my go to on flights.

Cloud gets expensive REALLY fast.

External SSD -- why not just build a desktop instead? Livin' that dongle + accessory life.

I would take a 512gb neo over this any day. 256gb is laughable and you'll be battling the storage limit just to do OS updates.
