Will this work on a 2017 Nissan Maxima SV?
If your car has wired Carplay or wired Android Auto then theoretically it should be able to make those features wireless. However there's only one way to find out.

Reviews not good, not sure if it's bluetooth or sth. Bought one see how it works with iphone
It uses Bluetooth to create a Wi-Fi bridge between phone and adapter.

I was offered to buy Android auto adapter for $150, 10 years ago at Honda dealer and I chose not to . Will this work without the adapter?
What do you mean by adapter? Something like the wireless one in this post? All android auto needs is a USB cable (A or C depending on the car) plugged into your phone and the car. This adapter plugs into the same USB port your phone would be using for your car's built-in Android Auto or Apple Carplay.

I received mine a couple of days back and I have tested with both android (pixel 9a) and apple (iPhone 17e). It works as advertised with both the devices. My car has wired android auto and apple CarPlay and this device has helped me to get connected seamlessly as soon as I enter the car without the need to reach out to a cable. I have not observed any lag/slowness/stutter etc so far with either devices but my sample size is small. Will report back in case of any issues.

Yes but I have recently found that these cheapos cannot keep up with the data rate of an intended USBC interface. It will studder, error, disconnect. Just like a lower quality USBC cable will. In fact, I cannot get any USBA wireless adapter to work consistently, with or without a USBC adapter added, with my wife's Bose head unit in her new car. All work in my 3 year old JBL Toyota perfectly.
I bought a different USBA adapter that was ~$15 and it works flawlessly with my 2021 Toyota Prius Prime and iPhone. Been using it for 6 months and I don't even think about it.

I got mine about 3 days ago. So far the only "hickup" i got was that my Google Maps went offline. ChatGPT told me to go under settings, locations, location services and location accuracy then turn off "wifi-scanning". this fixed it, no disconnects and no lag. takes about 20 seconds after car startup to connect. I'm very impressed because previously i bought a bigger unit for like 45 off woot and it kept disconnecting. I'm using android w/ a 2023 camry if that helps anyone.

Alternatively, if you have an old radio system, might be worth the money and effort to change it out with an aftermarket radio. Went through 2 OEM rav4 radios that failed. Installed aftermarket radio that had CarPlay and so much more. Knock on wood that it last longer than silly Toyota radio.

Is this true android auto or android auto through carplay? It reads like the latter which lacks full android auto functionality

Cheapos have higher probability to be bad stuffs but not always.
I've bought Motorolla one, cost $80+. It was usable but not the best. Right after the warranty just expired, it kept disconnecting and became unreliable.
Got one for $10 from woot. So far so good, never disconnected, solid connection.

Ordred this and got it yesterday. Works pretty decently compared to my older expensive CarPlay dongle. I noticed way less lag and it hasn't cut out randomly like my $70 dongle. Really good pickup for $10.
