As for the new gen 3 (2025) 11-inch models, those are true upgrades over the gen 1 and 2 with different hardware, a larger screen and more. However, they start around $500 if you want the backlit version.
For $82 you get PW5 sig edition (32g) and in very good condition. Returnable. Mine came with firmware 5.18.3

The 2022 Kindle Scribe stands out as a strong value for reading and note taking, especially if you want the large 11 inch screen without paying for the newer models. Gen 1 and gen 2 share the same core hardware and software, while gen 2 mainly adds a slightly more paper like display texture and cosmetic changes. The newer gen 3 is a real hardware upgrade, but backlit versions start around $500. Caveats include occasional stock disappearing during checkout and some returned units lacking PDF renaming, which makes organization harder. A practical pick if you want the Scribe experience at a lower price.

The 2022 Gen 1 and 2024 Gen 2 Scribe share the same CPU, RAM, battery, panel, and software features; Gen 2 mainly adds a slightly more paper-like display texture and cosmetic changes. The 2025 Gen 3 is a real hardware upgrade, but the backlit models start around $500, so Gen 1 is the better value if you want the Scribe experience cheaply.
This deal is reported to be ad-free, with no lockscreen ads on the unit received. That makes it more attractive than the standard $67 listing for shoppers who want an ad-free Kindle.
A returned Scribe was reported to lack PDF renaming on-device, which makes organizing files harder. If you rely on tidy document names, that limitation can be a practical drawback.
The writing feel is described as pretty similar to the reMarkable 2. The Scribe's main advantage here is the backlit screen, while the reMarkable 2 remains the more specialized note-taking device.
KindleModding can speed up the device, free it from Amazon's ecosystem, and let you use KOReader. To avoid losing that flexibility, the device should not update past firmware 5.18.6, and Airplane Mode is recommended.

Seems like the better note taking/ai features in gen2+ are worth it
The 2025 gen 3 is actually a large upgrade, but it's triple the price.

of course since this refurb unit I linked previously is not through Woot, no risk in seeing since it's normal Amazon return policy.

The first-gen Scribe can only be jailbroken if it's on 15.8.5.0.1 or earlier. If you get one on 5.18.6, it's already too far.

Why would one need to jailbreak the scribe? I can already sideload books. Are there alternative apps that support the pencil?
It has broad support for many formats, and more formatting and view options. It basically just makes your Kindle more flexible, not locked down by Amazon's restrictions.
