The 2022 Kindle Scribe stands out as a strong value for reading and note taking, especially if you want the large 11 inch screen without paying for the newer models. Gen 1 and gen 2 share the same core hardware and software, while gen 2 mainly adds a slightly more paper like display texture and cosmetic changes. The newer gen 3 is a real hardware upgrade, but backlit versions start around $500. Caveats include occasional stock disappearing during checkout and some returned units lacking PDF renaming, which makes organization harder. A practical pick if you want the Scribe experience at a lower price.

How's the writing experience on these? I've never seen or used one. How does it compare to reMarkable, Boox, etc.?

Its pretty similar to the reMarkable 2. My wife has a Gen 2 and with the upgrades I'd like to switch to one for the backlit screen...but I'm waiting for a deal on the colorsoft version for a true upgrade.

Ordered one...This seems like a better deal than the standard one at $67. Plus it doesn't have lockscreen ads. Thanks.
Look into KindleModding. It greatly speeds up the device, frees you from Amazon's ecosystem and KOReader is vastly superior. Just make sure you follow the steps in loading up the device so there's no space for the Kindle to update the firmware past 5.18.6. Airplane Mode is your friend.

Gen 1 (2022) and 2 (2024) Scribe have the same internals (CPU, RAM, battery) and the same panel. The main functional difference is the gen 2 display has a slightly more paper-like texture. There are cosmetic changes such as the white bezel on the gen 2, different shell colors and a slightly smaller bezel gap. The software features should be identical between them since Amazon pushed all the features previously to the gen 1. The gen 1 with a premium pen is a much better value in most regards.

As for the new gen 3 (2025) 11-inch models, those are true upgrades over the gen 1 and 2 with different hardware, a larger screen and more. However, they start around $500 if you want the backlit version.
I'm using a gen 1 Scribe that I got in 2025, and I personally could not afford the gen 3 Scribe right now even if I wanted. I read books and Manga on mine and am more than happy with it. Manga is actually the main reason I got it over a regular Kindle!

How bad is the typical scratch and dent condition? Minor signs of use or large hideous slashes?

Is the 2022 gen 1 scribe worth it? Vs 2024 gen 2 or 2025 gen 3?

Seems like the better note taking/ai features in gen2+ are worth it
There is almost no difference between first and second gen. I think the pen is slightly upgraded, and the screen has a different texture? That's about it. The processor is the same, and the 2022 version runs the exact same software as the 2024 version.
The 2025 gen 3 is actually a large upgrade, but it's triple the price.

The chance that this Kindle comes with firmware before 5.18.6 is pretty low. You might get lucky, but I wouldn't count on it.

I bought 2, both were 5.18.3....of course anything is YMMV, however these refurb models sit in their box for months waiting to be bought.

of course since this refurb unit I linked previously is not through Woot, no risk in seeing since it's normal Amazon return policy.

One last nitpick: https://kindlemodding.org/kindle-models.html
The first-gen Scribe can only be jailbroken if it's on 15.8.5.0.1 or earlier. If you get one on 5.18.6, it's already too far.

Why would one need to jailbreak the scribe? I can already sideload books. Are there alternative apps that support the pencil?

There are a lot of apps, but the most important is KOReader: https://koreader.rocks/
It has broad support for many formats, and more formatting and view options. It basically just makes your Kindle more flexible, not locked down by Amazon's restrictions.

Is there any way to do math on this device or any other that is similar to mathcad? I'd love it to be able to do basic math
