These U-Shaped units are pretty much used year-round around here. I have to clean them about every 6 months. All I use is the portable pressure washer gun and some disinfecting/cleaning spray. Usually Spray-Nine, or some foaming evaporator cleaner. The only thing I take apart is the wire grate and the deflector vanes. The wire grate goes in the trash with the first cleaning. Removing the fins/vanes is not totally necessary, but it does make things much easier. I would never even consider taking out the blower wheel. I did it once, and that was enough for me.
I spray the wheel down with cleaner while rotating it slowly with a wooden skewer until it is fully covered. Then I wait a couple of minutes to let it do it's thing to loosen up the filth. Then while holding the wheel steady, I use the pressure sprayer to blast all that crap off the wheel and let it run down the back of the evaporator. Unless its really bad, you don't even really need the cleaner. It's mainly to help kill the odors and provides some residual protection. I do spray the wheel again with the cleaning agent after blasting the crud (for the same reason).
The whole process can be completed while the unit is in the window if you put down a plastic bin and some towels to catch the over spray. You do need a large hole on the back of the unit to let the water drain out. You can use the same method to clean the evaporator and the condenser too. You can finish the complete system cleaning in less than 30 minutes!
I use a Fanttick pressure washer I got from Costco for $35 on clearance. It's really the only job that this thing does well! They're long gone from Costco, but you can still find them. I recently started using another unit from Amazon that works even better. In a pinch, you could use a Water-Pik type device, but it will take much longer. A $10 unit from Amazon will get the job done eventually.

Some Pictures of the results. Sorry there are no before pics of blower. I can assure you they were stomach-turning though! I've seen it so bad you can hardly tell its supposed to be blue!
I should really do a YouTube video showing the process. So many people are struggling needlessly in trying to clean these things!

There are videos on YouTube on how to disassemble it to clean and remove mold, along with a few for how to prevent it from forming in the unit.

I just bought one of the restored/like new Midea 8,000 btu u-shaped window a/c units last week for $189 (I believe it's out of stock now though) from the same company that's selling this 12,000 btu one. It looks brand new and came with the replacement drain plugs which I'll replace. I haven't installed it yet but ran it just to make sure it works and it worked perfectly. I have no qualms about using this recalled a/c unit.
EDIT: I ran some VERY quick and dirty numbers and figure I would save about $100 per year with this Midea A/C. I think I'll just hold on to my current A/C for a few more years. I just don't have the juice to take on this install for $100 a year.
