Yep. Nobody uses firestick anymore, I tossed all 4 of mine and replaced them with the ONN 4k android boxes, like most people. And you can completely shut off google if you want. No worries of blocked or deleted apps.

Got one as a backup, have two Fire4K sticks still running from when Woot was doing fire sales of them for like $12.
Had 3 but one bricked itself a year ago and got replaced with an ONN4K box.
Like people said, the ONN4K is definitely more robust, but the FireSticks are set to auto launch Kodi at startup and we have them going through a home AdGuard server to block updates and such. Kodi can launch the Android apps as well so we did the Olympics with Peacock with barely any ads (AdGuard again) and it's simple enough that everyone in the house can control it without needing tech support (me).
As a 16 dollar back up Kodi device it'll go into a drawer.

this isn't that "Fire Stick select" where nothing can be side loaded but you should definitely look into at least setting up an OpenDNS Home account or private DNS blocking on your router/etc to disable updates and phoning home.
They have wireless ADB and can be debloated a bit with some technical knowhow, but you should definitely not trust Amazon to limit what can be put on it at any moment (hence the update blocking)

In case you are wondering, the forum on woot says it can be side loaded. Bought one as a spare.

These new ones are awful if you plan to run 3rd party apps on them. And there's a post that they'll remove them if they feel they need to do so. The Onn 4k boxes are pretty nice and about the same price range.

One of my 4k sticks decided one day that my 3rd party apps had to go, when you selected one it would say it's "dangerous" and only gave an option to uninstall. So, it went in the trash. Replaced with Onn 4K box which doesn't have Big Brother telling you what you can and can't do.

I can not find a single onn box for the same price. Can you provide a link?

Got one last time and thanks to a poster in the previous threads did the voice over trick after blocking certain websites and throttle internet speeds to device to bypass forced update after connecting to wifi. Successfully loaded launch manager and got projectivy and kodi to stream truehd atmos via passthrough and 4k DV for $16. Im tempted to buy another for backup

Honestly anyone here thinking about this. Just get the $29 Onn box. It's definitely worth the extra few dollars.

Do recall what the name of the thread was or what the post looked like?

I'm very curious to see it and I thank you for your mentions.

The ONN Google TV OS at Walmart is better for side-loading. Amazon is blocking a bunch of apps.

What one can do with an Amazon branded device today is no guarantee what one will be able to do with an Amazon branded device tomorrow.

Streaming devices, Fire tablets, Kindle e-readers... Every firmware update they get Amazon is tightening the noose and locking them down more and more.

Don't support this crappy behavior by giving them your money for this restricted junk.
