I guess the price is okay, but chunks beat chips 100% of the time in my opinion.

ive never gotten meaningful flavour impact when using these types of chips. The smoky taste of the charcoal always overpowers them.

Are they best used in a smoker?

True, but certain smokers can only hold chips in their tiny wood holder at the bottom of their propane "smokers". But at the same time, I've seen chips actually last a lot longer in some smokers. (Pit Boss is one).

New to this. So what are chunks and what are pellets and what are the advanatages of each and what do you recommend - e.g. is there a wood that provides great flavor to beef or chickent?

For an MES, you have to use chips. This is why they make both.

Chunks are just that- big chunks of wood. They'll burn more slowly and release more 'good' smoke. Just because your smoker is... uh... smoking, doesn't mean it's going to taste great. You want what is often called 'clean' or 'thin, blue' smoke. Chunks get you there and do it over a longer period than chips.

Chips will burn up fast and make smoke but give you a shorter sweet spot. On some grills / smokers it may be a pain to add chips intermittently, such as on a kamado like a Joe or Egg, especially with a convector in place.

Pellets are fuel for pellet grills. They're a processed wood product. Pellet grills are fast and easy but don't tend to give as much smoke flavor as a normal smoker does- they burn really cleanly too. You can run a smoker at a real low temp and get some smoke but it's not necessarily going to get you the same amount, and there are other (often surmountable) downsides to a pellet grill.
You can buy a "smoke tube" and use it with pellets to get a bit more smokey flavor.

Some people don't even like that much smokey flavor anyway, so don't obsess until you know.

I think fruitwoods like apple and peach give a mild and sweet taste, cherry is faintly sweet/spicy, and hickory/pecan/Mesquite have that classic BBQ taste. You gotta try them all to see what you like, but I prefer cherry and applewood for chicken and pork.
At the same time a grill using hardwood lump charcoal will give better smoker flavor than briquettes in my opinion.

I have a Weber and just purchased a smoke tube as someone said they work in the BBQ to provide smoke. So, if I am using a tube, is it best to use pellets? I just received the tubes about 3 or so days ago and have yet to try them.

Thanks for the advice.

Cottonwood is great to mix with applewood you keep the sweetness well suddenly imparting more smokiness

I use chips for smoker box on my gas grill. I will use in charcoal chimney smoker depending on what meat and purpose. But chunks mostly for me.

Ive read you can layer these with lump charcoal in gravity fed smokers, I want to pick up a bag to try, but id prefer a less sweet wood.
