That's just bad advice. 16gb is more than enough for a lot of people and an extra 8gb isn't necessary for the addition price. Future proof is just bad advice because you're spending more money for something that in the future will have better tech. Spend what you need, not what you think you need.

Agreed. I have an m1 with 8gb and it's more than enough. macOS is definitely written more efficiently than windows. 16gb is plenty for an Air still.
People who need more than that will typically get the Mac Pro or Studio for actual work uses that demands it.

If you can afford it, the M5 Air with 512gb storage. There's enough of an upgrade to justify only if your budget can manage it. I was able to find an open box M4 16gb/512gb for $800 at Best Buy.

They price match at Costco?
They price-adjust if the price drops. But it's only themselves they do it with and for a certain window of time (90 days, iirc).

This new M5 or refurbished M4 Air with half the storage (256GB) for about $760?
faster chip, faster DDR5 memory, more storage, and the NAND chips are almost 3x faster, 6500MB read and write speed on the M5 vs M4. I do notice the NAND chip speed difference when loading programs day to day, I have an M4 16/256 as well

Don't end up with 16g. Get a 24g to future proof .
IT professional here. 16gb is future proof enough on a Mac. These will be supported for years. I wouldn't be surprised if up to a decade.

16G is more than enough for the casual user. Keep In mind, accidents happen with laptops, future proofing may not be viable with a broken laptop

Man.... Is it finally time to upgrade from my M1 Pro 14?! Like the idea of a smaller, thinner laptop! Not that the MacBook Pro 14 is huge, but still.

Pretty tempting, shame the deal isn't so good on the 1TB. Also applies if you select 3 years apple care + which seems nice given it has accidental damage

It's is just a terrible advise. Indeed it's based on everyone's usage . However AI apps are evolving 8Gb is obsolete and 16 will be in 3 years . For MBA you should get 24 g if anyone wants to keep it for 7 years . MBP with 16 Gb is enough as is superior than air . Go ahead and checkout single core , multi core benchmarks memory bandwidth etc . It's matters a lot .
He is not lying... 16 is good for people but if you are going to use AI, get 24. The more ai features built into the os, the more 16 will feel like 8. There is a reason 8 is not available.

Apple was always taught it as being great on memory and it's not like windows. But when they start pushing 24 and more last couple years, that mess went out the window. It's not just memory management and all that bs. This is something different. And they have not been able to get around memory efficiency with ai. It's going to be the same as everyone else. 16 is the bottom standard.

Most Max Go 5 to 10 years. I take my Windows computers just the same distance, but for a fact if you think about that go ahead and pay now. Very frustrated last few years with those 8 GB m1 and M2 and M3 computers. After I sold my last M3 with 8 gb, I bought a m4 pro with 24 gigs.

So 16 will get you, but if you can go ahead and get that 24. But if you don't have to buy right now.. they're going to drop price even more. I would wait till I can get one of these around $800 new.

256 storage, a used model, and a one year older chip to save $200?? 256gb alone is almost a deal breaker.

The M4 MBA was send $750 most of the holiday season. This laptop is not $200 better, I'd wait for a better deal.
