2009 was still a relative age of innocence: long long before pandemic inflation, tariff inflation, and (latest arrival) Iran war inflation. $167 for these right now is a small miracle, considering all that.

remember buying this for $70 from akg site like 4 years ago. I actually returned them cause they felt so cheap. Biggest regret now

tl;dr: ASR: "I can't recommend either version of AKG K701 without EQ. With EQ, they are fine."
I concur. I had them, returned them, and paid more for something else. But I wouldn't say the K-701 is bad for the $.
Guitar Center is currently $400. Amazon is often $167. I think $167 is fair, but not SD.
Funny Beats story. I was in a Beats store years ago. I auditioned one of their best (although I didn't realize this at the time). The salesperson asked what I thought, and I said, "Do you have anything good?" The store became silent. I quickly made my exit. Never listened to a Beats since.

Yeah theres was a deal with a stackable coupon that would drop the price to like 85%. Bought a bunch of stuff from them for cheap (coupon was a company error. Was never suppost to stack with other coupons). But mostly everything got shipped.

ASR is an old guy (Amir) with broken ears just "reviewing" based on a target FR graph and his measurement rig. It's not a good way to go about subjective audio qualities. People think ASR is a good source but it actually isn't.

This is not a deal, 3rd party new has been consistently $167.
