I match my socks (color and length) based on my shoes first. When you got black shorts and black shoes, you should definitely wear black socks whether long or ankle socks. You shouldn't wear long white socks with black shoes unless you are Michael Jackson or a soccer player. The outfit should blend together and black on black on black blends together here. I do prefer ankle socks the majority of the time.
