This is inaccurate, for the mouse to read yes it doesn't need a pad but it still provides a better surface to move the mouse over compared to straight wood,metal,plastic,etc. and at 4 dollars it is a cute mousepad with a decent size for the price.

YMMV. My desk is made of wood and it feel much better to have the full surface to move the mouse around instead of limiting myself to a mouse pad.

Way easier to clean too.
