I'm not sure if they last longer, but I've had terrible luck with alkaline Duracell AA/AAA batteries leaking and ruining the devices they're used in.

What uses 9V now? If your smoke detector does, then it's > 10 years (likely) and needs replacement.

If you're playing 70s/80s Mattel handheld games, then.... WHOOO.HOOO!

My metal detector also takes 9V.
