Why is maglite so expensive, is it because of the name? You get so much better performing flashlights for much less money from many other brands.

Name and reputation.

And there are much better lights out there for sure. And those better light can be found much cheaper.

(Wurkkos FC11c --> 1200 lumens --> $20 --> Comes with a 18650 battery AND charging cable AND built-in charging port.)

Maglite --> Uses an esoteric 1980s C-cell battery format which NO ONE uses anymore. And 490 lumens is a joke. And....batteries are NOT included!

They claim on the box to be "A USA Manufacturer" with an adorable USA flag -- which is a really weird way of not being entirely clear if this specific product is "Made in the USA". So until proven otherwise, assume it's made in the same giant factories in China as all the other cheapo lights are made. So not only it's Made in China, they're trying to deceive you about it. I know how I'll vote with my wallet.

There should be a case study done on this company for their failure to adapt to changing technology; they are the Blackberry of the flashlight world. I have a box full of old non-led, d-cell lights and most of the tail caps are welded shut from leaking batteries.

They use "A U.S.A. Manufacturer" because some of their componts are sourced globally (LEDs and circuitry, some O-rings and seals). They machine the flashlight bodies domestically but raw material is sourced globally. A lot of their packaging has something like "Some imported parts/components used." on it.

Maglights aren't flashlights. You're buying a club and plausible deniability. Which happens to light up. Poorly.
