I've used this for about 2 years as well as, a Focusrite Scarlet, iRig Pro Duo I/O, and more recently an Audigo Mic as well as sometimes I just use the Dolby On app on my phone. They all have pro's and con's but no matter what you decide to record on I'd just say record more often, record longer than you think before and after your music, be open with sharing your recordings as you grow and develop as a musician and don't get hung up on if it doesn't sound right yet. It's about a lot of practice in the right directions that make you start to feel comfortable with your own voice and your own playing.

I really like this device for recording in the woods; the quality feels great; the physical sliders also feel so good to use compared to touch screen stuff. It's also really useful to bring to an open mic with the two correct cables; you can typically ask to plug in and capture off the output lines of the mixer the sound team is running if you're kind when you ask and don't come off as entitled and realize they are providing the local music scene with a very helpful service.

Go play and record!

I got mine for $120 on Woot in September 2025. I've seen them as low as $99 on Woot (though possibly refurb, new may have been $109). 32bit float is awesome. As long as I'm not clipping, I'm good.

Seems like a good recorder for dawless jams, travel, rehearsals, demos, etc. Can layer and bounce independent tracks.

Been this low price before.

Just going to say these are really cool little tools for musicians. It's nice to occasionally get away from doing everything in a laptop DAW and just having a device that lets you capture ideas. Yes, I know every phone has a voice recorder and other various apps for multitrack recording, but this is a really neat way to just plug in and get going. Oh, it's obviously also great for mobile podcasting.

I have the Zoom H5Studio and it's AMAZING! The sounds it records are spectacular! Very low noise floor!

It's also this price at Musician's Friend, which gives you 8% back in credit ($12).

I'm getting creepy bot vibes from these unreservedly "awesome product!" posts. Zoom quality has declined precipitously the past few years, and their last solid/good/well-built product was the Zoom F6. If you want a cheap plastic chassis (just zoom in on those blue sliders too, pun intended), RF interference, and bad software/driver support, be my guest though...

I want a recorder with a low noise floor I can record a live jazz club with. 2 onboard mics needed. I haven't looked into products like this for 10 years or so, curious what is good now. I know this has 1 mic so it's not what I am looking for, but is there anything people have experience with and can recommend I check out?

I basically want to be able to record something like this: https://youtu.be/BkBhGD4FV-g?si=xOk8B1PbBFQ8awFx

Have a zoom h5. Works and sounds great except the entire outside became extremely sticky over time like many other people.... really can't recommend. But it does sound good.

Can't comment on the sound but TASCAM just came out with the DR-05XP and DR-40XP with 32-bit float. Nice to see that becoming more common.

Agreed with the sentiments here. It's a great little device but this price is nothing special.
We got one from woot for $120 or so and my kid uses it all the time. The obvious use is recording and layering tracks using line in, but he also uses it as an audio interface to his computer to record guitar directly. The built in mic is okay. It has USB so you aren't dependent on batteries if at home, and it uses AA and lasts a nice long while with eneloop rechargeables. Built in effects are okay, but I assume everyone has their own pedals for effects. Built in drum tracks are serviceable and not too riddled with flourish, but they don't adapt tempo to playing or anything so you just layer in whatever makes sense.
Negatives: The body is plastic and a little cheap and the menu navigation takes a bit to get used to. The connectors are on all sides so if you're plugged into usb-c and a 1/4 jack on the bottom, and an 1/8 monitor jack on the side the thing looks like a squid. Oh and it only records 2 tracks at a time despite being a four track. You can't even do two inputs and the mic at the same time.
It's good but if you can wait, wait for a better price.
