This is a great price, but FWIW, they have been as low as $50 with charger on a YMMV clearance deal, I want to say at Home Depot, I bought two, had I not gotten that deal though I would definitely jump on this for one or two.

Why does this battery look 'shorter' than 5ah?

Its a GIANT battery. I have this and some 1.7ah powerstacks, and the 5ah is massive compared to the little guys. Its looks are deceiving, look at the size of the connector on the battery, the connector looks tiny, its all relative and the 5ah is way larger compared to 1.7 Wink

Somewhat at odds with 'older' line of batteries, since batteries are getting more compact in later iterations.

Smaller and lighter

If you're referring to the OP saying older, they mean older stock, as these hit the market at a VERY premium price point and didn't sell well a lot of places. Also the idea that powerstack are more compact is somewhat of a misnomer. They have a much higher maximum current draw relative to their size both physically and amp hour capacity, but they're not actually THAT much smaller than an equal capacity "conventional" round cell battery. The 1.7ah that hit the market first seemed tiny to most people because it's a 1.7ah battery, and the pouch cell format allowed it to be very compact in all dimensions compared to an equally sized round cell battery. But that size advantage gets much smaller in larger capacity batteries. The 5ah are definitely smaller than a 5ah traditional, but they're still a big battery.

Because it's massive compared to the 5ah batteries.

Not true, the 5ah powerstack I have is considerably bigger than the 5ah normal batteries. They made a name for these because the first powerstack were 1.7ah, these are bigger and heavier than standard 5ah. About halfway between a 5ah and a 6ah non-powerstack.

Here's a picture to show, the 5ah is second, the 5ah power stack is the third battery. Dewalt lists the standard at 1.5lbs and the 5ah powerstack at 1.75lbs. The small battery in the picture is the 1.7ah. This one never made sense to me (more power but more size), a 3ah powerstack would have been better for weight and size.

Absolutely, the (somewhat old, due to tariffs/inflation) rule of thumb is $10/ah is a really good deal for a basic battery, a "premium" one like powerstack or flexvolt can be as high as $15/ah. That means the battery alone should cost a slick dealer 50-75, throw in a free charger that is worth 20-30 dollars and you're really winning. Typically I consider a deal price based on what you can buy a "new in the box" part on marketplace for (lots of these batteries and tools get bought in "combos" and then sold separately for profit or because someone didn't need part of the combo, which drives the price well below retail pricing)

The claim this is msrp'd at $250 is about as laughable as they come...
