I've had a lot of recent levator muscle pulls (e.g., whiplash, turn your head quickly and feel a sharp pain down your middle back) where I could not turn my head without pain. I experienced this 18 years ago where I could not move my neck for a couple of weeks!
My secret now to limit the pain and speed recovery has been to use 1000mg acetaminophen (nociceptor pain blocker) and 600mg of ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory) as those allowed me to turn my head with less discomfort to stretch the muscle. I also use a heated rice sock.
(Check with your doctor before medicating as your health my contraindicate using any OTC pain meds.)
Hopefully, the massaging of the neck and scaps will result in even better effect ... or prevention.
For $20, this is a no-brainer.
