How do you game on a Bluetooth headphone? Isn't there latency?
For initial setup and customization, you should use the app. There's also a custom hearing mode which tests your hearing on both sides to see what frequencies you can properly hear or not, and it adjusts audio so you can better hear. It does improve the sound quality quite a bit in my opinion. But outside of the initial setup, I never really touch the app aside from checking for firmware updates every once in a while.
Flagged frequently returned on Amazon makes me question the authenticity of all 1000+ reviews as well as the ones here.
Since there are almost no brick and mortar stores to try out headphones before you buy, a lot of people will just buy from Amazon knowing they can return if they don't like them. Sound is a very subjective thing, so there are always going be people who don't like a specific headphone no matter how good most people think it is.
