"To celebrate Earth Day, Smart Planet, an Altman Plants brand available exclusively at The Home Depot, will be hosting Milkweed plant giveaway events at select Home Depot store locations. At the events, young native milkweed plants will be given away to customers who stop by the Smart Planet booth.
Milkweed plants help protect the diminishing Monarch butterfly population and create breeding habitats for Monarchs—all while providing food and shelter for other wildlife and pollinators. Planting Milkweed in monarch breeding areas is one way we can help grow the Monarch population.
Join Smart Planet at The Home Depot starting at 10am to pick up a milkweed plant and learn more about creating environmentally friendly gardens that benefit Monarch butterflies, other pollinators and wildlife, and our surrounding world!

I recommend you be very careful where you plant this. It's not invasive like, say, kudzu but its seeds float in the wind like dandelion seeds and it has aggressive underground rhizomes. It's a pretty fast-growing vine so it'll get tangled in other nearby plants in no time. I have some that has started growing among my viburnum shrubs and I have to unwind the vines and yank it out at least once a month in the summer.
If you plant this, it's probably best to limit it to pots or some sort of raised container where you can keep the roots from spreading. If you plant it in the ground, treat it like aggressive ostrich ferns and install a barrier to keep it contained. And for the sake of your neighbors, pull the seed pods before they spread millions of seeds...
