Don't do it. Cheap lumber. For your invested time to build it, use better materials and you will enjoy it way longer.

You need ground contact for that.

These seem to be made for ground contact. But yea, some bricks or gravel underneath could help, right?

I have used these for the risers in my 8 steps to the backyard. They are not really in the ground more so holding back the ground. They last about 8-10 years and by then are just dried out and rotting mostly on the exposed surfaces. Then I have to rip it all out and rebuild. But I have noticed the quality of these landscape keeps getting worse and worse every time I go thru this. The last time I treated them with preservative again myself before installing them which helped but I guess I need to treat the exposed surfaces every year which I did not do. This time I am going to try ground contact 2x4x8s.

I used these to build the base of a pottery bench, saved myself about $30 and it is still rock solid 4 years later.

It could, but the base is the last place you wanna skimp on so I'd try to save $$ elsewhere if you had to. But if you're not looking for something to last 5+ years and aren't gonna overload it then it'll do. Not every deck needs to support a hot tub, right? 😉
