Yup, great for balls, bike tires. I have jumper cables but its too much hassle in parking lot. Need this screwdriver, pliers, and blade at minimum in your car.

I got this one last year and have only used it to top up my tires every so often. Does what it needs to do.

I've had their tire inflator in my car for nearly 3 years and it's saved me a handful of times. Tops off 4 tires in the winter no issue and has brought fully flat slow leaking tires up to pressure to get to a tire shop thrice.

Agree, Consider a LiFePO4 jump starter if storing in a hot vehicle. Less chance for thermal runaway.

I'm traveling next month and the family house im staying at has a car that hasn't been used in a year. Tempted to get this in case it doesn't start. So I don't have to deal with AAA. Don't know if I should buy it now and travel with it in carry on luggage. Or wait to order until I get to my destination but sale might be over

You can def take this jumpstarter on your carry on. Just be mindful of the 100 Wh total power bank limit the TSA has. This AstroAI S8 packs 37 Wh of power, so it should be fine, but def check the rules of your airline too. FAA has a page and a neat calculator for this: https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsa...-batteries

While technically true, it's almost entirely irrelevant in this case.

Short version: assuming this isn't a complete piece of garbage and the batteries aren't defective, the worst thing you realistically have to worry about is some level of reduced capacity over several years. Thermal runaway is possible but is extremely unlikely. AstroAI is one of the longer-running no-name Chinese brands and probably puts out units and batteries of better quality than the average no-name brand.

Longer version:

The battery chemistry will change the specific characteristics, but the most bog-standard of modern, non-LFP lithium batteries have a operating range of of -4F (-20C) up to 140F (60C). Above this is where the risk of pouch swelling increases because the electrolyte solvent can start to vaporize, increasing pressure (possibly with minor swelling). This significantly damages the battery by reducing the amount of useful electrolyte and therefore reduces capacity and performance.

That said, going above 113F (45C) almost certainly causes at least some level of damage, and this is where "normal" heat-related battery degradation tends to happen. It's at least part of the reason your cell phone doesn't last as long after even a year, let alone 3 or 5. And while I wouldn't knowingly use a battery that had any swelling, most older non-LFP electronics have some level of swelling, even if it's due to age or because they were run down to 0% too many times. They aren't blowing up all the time because - unless it's defective - the battery and device was manufactured with this in mind.

Furthermore, while this degradation can happen quickly under the right (wrong) circumstances, it also tends to have a bit of a cap on the amount of damage it will do even after repeated instances. Let's go crazy and say you lose 1/4 of the capacity of your jump starter the first year because your car is parked out in the blazing sun during a never-ending heat wave where it's 100F outside all day, every day. If the same thing happens next year, you won't lose anywhere near that capacity again. Maybe your capacity now down by 1/3. The next year you will hardly lose any at all because the degradation has "stabilized". Again, a lot depends on the chemistry.

Now, back to your thermal runaway. It's around 176F (80C) before the electrolyte solvents in a non-LFP battery start to boil and you get some spicy pillows. You don't want spicy pillows. Spicy pillows should be disposed of properly, immediately, because not only is your battery pretty much useless, it's also at risk of popping from damage. But it's not until about 266F (130C, perhaps as high as 150C) that the potential for thermal runaway exists. Assuming the cell isn't defective, this is extremely unlikely (and even then, defective cells are far more likely to present in a way that isn't exploding) because the device using the battery has completely disabled its functionality. Your device quit working before it ever got bad enough to be of concern.

It really comes down to manufacturing. A defective LFP battery is dangerous, even if it's less dangerous than a defective NMC battery. Defective batteries are, by a large margin, the source of dangerous batteries these days. A halfway decent device will have the protections (eg. temperature control circuits) in place to prevent use of a battery operating outside its expected range and since a defective battery will have other symptoms before exploding, the device should have multiple safeguards in place that would prevent the battery from being used in cases like this. They're not even expensive components and, while I'm sure saving $0.25 in a $30 device is still significant on a large scale, there is a point at which it's not worth it. And while I wouldn't put it past any no-name brand to skimp on these protections, AstroAI is one label that has been around a little while. Selling a few more units because you have the name is worth spending the $0.25 and keeping the name in good standing.

I don't disagree with you, by the way. All other things being equal, get the LFP model. It's a no-brainer. But you're not going to find an LFP jump starter with air compressor anywhere near $35. I do like LOKITHOR's J1350 when it drops below $50, but it's not a fair comparison. The LOKITHOR JA3000 is around $150 and I'm not aware of it dropping in price very often (though SD shows it was $67 back in 2024 for whatever that's worth). If it were ever that price again, I'd buy it over this $35 unit without a second thought.
